Is a liquid diet good for helping with lower right side pain?

After another trip to the doctor's office yesterday, followed by 6 hours in the ER so I could have a CT with contrast, I am still left with pain level of 10 and no relief in sight.

3 rounds of dilaudid and no relief. Good news no obstruction and now only mild inflammation in my ileum. However that does not explain this excruciating pain in my lower right side. I have been reading about liquid diets. I am diabetic and none of my doctors from the GI to the GP have any dietary advice despite me having asked all 4 people I have seen in the last week. I am also very overweight so I don't need high calories or high sugar.

From your own experience do liquid diets help? Is there any resources out there I have missed that might help. I am still really new (May 21 2014 dx) to this. It is clear that pain medications aren't working so any advice would be so much appreciated.

A short term liquid diet could help, but with your diabetes, I'd be very careful about it, as there aren't a lot of liquids high in protein, and many are high in carbs. If your doctors aren't willing to help you with diet information, can one of them refer you to a dietitian? Especially one familiar with Crohn's?

However, your doctors should be working to address the inflammation. Are you on any meds to reduce it?

Prednisone 60 mg Budesonide 9mg Pentasa 4000mg Percocet 10/325. No pain relief. I have some high protein low carb options. I can also do bananas and yogurt. My options are limited. I was hoping bowel rest would help the ulcers in my ileum.

The only proven diet to be as effective as prednisolone -at least in kids is EEN
Exclusive enteral nutrition.
No food
Just nutritionally complete formula
Peptamen ( ordered at the nestle nutrition store online or through a doctors script ).
Ensure
Boost
e028 splash (website nutricia)

But given diabetes you would need to check the contents calories etc...

EAS has a lean and fit protein shake with the same vitamins and minerals as boost without the carbs and sugars. They are also 100 calories. I am also considered obese so I don't want high calories if I can help it. I am researching diabetic friendly smoothies as well.

Does the liquid diet really help with pain? I will get no help from my current doctors except to Google it. I am getting a referral to a better GI an hour away Monday.

You need sugar and carbs to balance it out period
Your body needs carbs/sugar to function and it's not the same as eating a sugary yogurt or dessert .
Most kids who drink EEN do not gain weight.
Regardless of the sugar /carbs
Its perfect balanced nutrition

See the EEN section here:

Doing nothing but protein is not good for anyone and is very taxing on the kidneys.

Crohn's takes months to years to get into remission .
There is no quick fix.
But EEN does help move things along.

Is there any research for EEN in adults? And with 6 kids and a job with adults with severe MR I am not sure a ng tube would work.

DS drinks his all orally .
He still does supplemental en - 2 peptamen jr a day .
He never had a tube .
A lot of adults drink it orally without a tube.

Boost /ensure are OTC .
Insurance covers my kiddos through the durable medical equipment clause- formula is infusion supplies ;)

Thank you. I was hoping to find something I can do without the doctor as it will be almost 2 months before I get to a new GI and the old one knows less than I do. Not to mention he is unavailable from Thursday at 5 pm till Monday at 8 am without any call services. No dietician available in the whole of the county here. So no professional advice available for 2 months. I am 7 weeks into extreme lower right side pain.

Where is your pain? Is the pain sudden onset? constant? crampy? associated with other symptoms? I don't understand how mild inflammation would cause a "10" so am wondering what else might be going on...

Did you just start the prednisone 60 and are you checking your BS? Prednisone can really raise BS a lot!

Sending a hug!

Pain starts along the hip runs around to my right side lower back and up to my ribs. Pain is deep and at time crampy. They did a CT with contrast last night in ER and told me that there was a very little mild inflammation in my ileum that we already knew about. The doctor last night left me screaming at him to get out because he could do nothing but say you already knew this. I was sent by my internist for the CT.

Prednisone 30 mg for 5 days then bumped to 60mg for 4 days. Day 5 today . Doctor said last night that there was nothing causing the pain.

Forgot to add internist did cbc wbc is up but not bad. He told me Tuesday I should be better by Friday. Also have insulin in case my BS goes up.

Could it be your gall bladder causing that pain? I believe that gall bladder problems can be super painful. The pain usually starts under the right ribs but can be referred to other areas of the body, usually on the right hand side. Crohns increases the risk of gall bladder problems too. Just a thought...

If the pain was obstructive, something should have shown on the CT. Having said this, a colonoscopy can determine much better if the crohns is causing the pain. I am not convinced a liquid diet is the way to go to be honest. Is the pain constant or does it get worse after eating? Is it better when you have been to the toilet? There might be an element of IBS, which quite a few of us with crohns have. Have you tried Peppermint tea or something like buscopan?

Constant pain worse 30 mind after eating. Colonoscopy showed ulcers in ileum. Pain increases with me moving around but stays at a 10 when still

If the pain is so severe, then it seems that there is something wrong. Is it not worth going back to see your dr? I know the system is different in the US then it is in the UK, but you really shouldn't have to put up with such bad pain. Are you taking pain medication? Is it not working? I found delayed release tablets much better, but not allowed them anymore because of my lack of colon. I am on oramorph which really helps when the pain is severe

I have pain meds that make me loopy but don't touch the pain. Currently having problems with my doctors. Getting new referral Monday. Till then I suffer. The emergency room is useless because I have Crohn's they won't do anything else and the GI is out of town. I was looking for something I could try till Monday when I go back to my internist.

You are on the low residue diet at the moment, I would just keep to that because of the diabetes. If the pain is after eating, there might be some narrowing, so that food hurts passing through. I know hours seem long when you are in pain.

Yes. And thanks. I can't do anything without pain and I don't sit still well. The hours drone on and I still hurt. I am pretty sure the pain meds are making me sick now.

To answer your question, YES... a soft and/or liquid diet greatly helped me when I was in a lot of pain!!! When I did that for several days, the pain subsides. By the way, I had really bad pain in my lower right abdomen too. I also follow a low residue/low fiber diet as well.

Like everyone said, you need to eat/drink with your diabetes in mind which you could probably do with high protein, low carbs, low sugar protein drinks. I add almond milk to mine and a banana. Plus, I'm pretty sure you need to eat/drink something every 3 hours to keep your blood sugar level. So maybe a combo of soft food and protein drinks that are ok for diabetes and Crohn's.

Best wishes to get that pain gone!

Still waiting for a referral. My old GI decided I needed another colonoscopy and endoscopy. He didn't even check my TI which is where the problem is. Still in pain. The GI is sending me to a surgeon so the surgeon can open me up and take a look around because the GI can't find anything .
