Hi all. I'm 56 years old and a 30 year fibromyalgia sufferer that is now new to Crohns as of May and am just learning the ropes.. I was wondering how soon after you eat something that is a bad food for u do u usually have an attack? I've been in a flare and on pred for 2 weeks and had an attack today with bad pain and a trip to the bathroom after which I felt fine.. Don't know if it was the bowl of cereal I had just eaten which I have eaten before and consider a "safe" food or the food I ate at a wedding on Saturday that was some new things I hadn't had yet since being diagnosed.. Thanks for the help..... Have a feel good day!!!

Sometimes it has nothing to do with food at all, sometimes its simply just Crohn's pain. When your in a flare its common to get sudden onsets of cramping and stomach pains.

hey sorry you're having a rough time. food has alot to do with my crohns. when im in a flare i eat then have d right after.i keep a food diary that has helped lots in pinpointing what foods aggravate me. i also write how many bms and emotional well being as stress is a big trigger for me. its also good to share with the drs. i hope you feel better soon.its all trial and error. good luck.

Keep a food diary - you're unfortunately going to get a lot of this while you get used to your new life. It will help you sort out what is what. For me, the time has been anything from hours up to days. Sort of depends on how your bowels were before you ate the "offending" food.

I agree with Shamrock, when my bowels are already irritated it can be rather quick (hours), but if I'm in a good place, more like a day.
Although, I also agree with AFIDZ, sometimes I think it is just Crohns being Crohns and not really related to anything I've eaten.

I found it really confusing to work out. I don't react to any individual food. The only things I react to are: 1. overall quantity of food eaten and 2. overall fibre content of my diet.

If I go a few days eating large (well, actually normal by a healthy person's standards) meals then after a few days my symptoms will get worse. If I go on a high-fibre diet, after a few days my symptoms will get worse.

So for me there's a few days delay, and there are no specific "bad" foods, just my diet as a whole.

Plus I get so many fluctuations in symptoms that are determined by invisible factors, so often it's nothing to do with food at all. But we (or I anyway) have a tendency to look for correlations - I always wanted to feel that I could control my symptoms with my actions, but I really can't. Usually when I get really ill, it's completely out of my control and nothing to do with anything I've done or not done.

If I'm in a flare then everything goes right through me.. Within half an hour I would say.

If not in a flare and had a trigger food or drink then may be an hour then 2 or 3 times after that.
