Just Diagnosed

I am fresh out of hospital after two surgeries, and woke up to find out I had Crohns. I have lost close to sixty pounds in the last eight months. And yes I am feeling very depressed right now.

I'm not surprised your depressed! What a shock to the system, . That is the same way my daughter was diagnosed and I well remember how I felt.

What surgery did you have? Are you taking any medication?

I'm glad you have found your way here, there's load of info and support and most importantly you will find you aren't alone in the way you are feeling.

I completely understand that your feeling depressed! I was only 19 and just had my daughter 2 weeks before i got dignosed with it! I had been healthy all my life untill this and my world was crushed! I had to have my whole colon removed and an illiostomy bag! And i hear ya about the weight! I dropped and looked sooo skinny. But i started taking some por biotics and supplements that help alot too! if your intrested i can share them with you! take care and stay strong! God bless!

thanks so much for the welcome. I basically went in for them to have a look around because all my bloodwork and my scans and PET scan were showing something. I had a Right hemi, then four hours later was rushed back in for emergency surgery because I was bleeding from all over, its just been too much, this past two years, my daughter was diagnosed with MS, our six month old grandson had to have an illiostomy, then five open heart surgeries and was on life support for three months so I had though all my problems were just stress related, but they think the stress just pushed it to the forefront. I have an excellent team and wonderful surgeron, but still feeling a little worried. I will see one of the specialists on wed to talk about the medications, any suggestions on what i should go in knowing or ask.

Oh my, it's no wonder you are stressed and Crohn's has reared it's ugly head. It's all so new to you so it's very normal to feel worried and concerned.

Following surgery the idea is that it should put you straight into remission and so the medication prescribed is to keep it that way. Both of my children have had right hemicolectomy's and are on Azathioprine (Imuran) as a maintenance medication. My daughter that had the same outcome as you after they went in to have a look has been in remission for over 5 years now. There are many medications on the market though so your specialist may well choose something else. Many of the medications used to treat CD will require that you have regular blood tests so be sure the doc is on top of that. Have a browse through the Treatment forum and sub forums and will get some idea of what is around...

Since you didn't have a diagnosis prior to surgrey and you have terminal ileum involvement I would also request bloods for B12, Folate, Iron Stores and Vit D. The ileum and terminal ileum is responsible for the absorption of many vitamins and minerals so perhaps you could speak with the specialist about monitoring some of those levels as well.

How long since your surgery and how are you feeling now?

Do you know how much bowel you had removed?

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter and grandson. How are they now?
