I have/had Crohn's colitis and was taking Humira 2x monthly. About three months ago things began to change. I experienced serious pain in my upper abdomen and just to the right of my belly button. I saw my doc, he moved me to Humira 1x weekly.

My insurance company balked and I went six weeks without medication before they finally approved.

Then a month ago, just after eating dinner, I experienced the most horrendous pain in my stomach. It went through my belly to my back or up my esophagus to my jaw and back. This lasted for 2.5 hours and I was doubled over hugging a pillow the entire time. (I knew it wasn't a heart attack because I'd just done a bunch of testing. However, if anyone has pain like that I would tell them to go to ER.)

I went back and saw my doctor the following day. He scheduled me for an endo/colonoscopy. I was still experiencing pain, so I just quit eating. It hurt too freaking much. I had just started the scd diet so I cut way back on any foods and lived on broth for at least one week. This seemed to help things.

Fast forward to last Thursday. During the endo/colonoscopy I woke up twice. Both times during the endo. The pain was extreme, a searing burning feeling that had me gasping for air and trying to pull the scope out of my mouth. I just remember everyone screaming at me and them holding my hands down. Then, it happened again.

I don't remember coming home, but I looked at my documentation once I woke up. The paperwork says: gastritis, dueodanalitis (sp) possible illeitis, hiatal hernia, GERD. Treatment to be considered once biopsies are returned.

Today, I'm still not eating much, but the foods from the scd diet seem to sooth me. I'm eating mostly yogurt and some scd banana bread and soup. I've lost almost 20 pounds since this began.

Tonight, I'm running a fever of100.5. I know I should call the doctor but I have a serious phobia about going to that office or talking to the doc. I live in a small town and don't have any other options.

I dunno. Maybe I just needed to vent. Is it normal to wake up like that? I've actually had nightmares over this. No one has mentioned it, no phone call from the doc, and I received a thank you note for using their facilities.

I don't know if the Crohn's is in my small intestine and stomach or what the heck is going on. Does anyone know how long biopsies take to come back? They took two from my stomach.

*sigh*

At what point do I need to call if my temperature spikes?

I don't think it's normal to wake up and even less so to remember doing it. My daughter is an RN and she said she watched a man suffer quite a bit with a similar procedure and he didn't remember any of it. They're supposed to give you drugs to make you forget.

Waking up happens sometimes. I have spoken to a few people here on the forum in the past who have woken up briefly at some point, including myself.

I remember waking up during my colonoscopy, looking at the monitor and howling in pain during the procedure. Then one of the techs in the room reached over and held my hand and my doctor said something to me to try and calm me. I remember there was pain for a moment, but thanks to the drugs they gave me I don't remember exactly what the pain felt like or anything after that. They just increased my anesthesia and I fell into a deeper "sleep". In my mind it all seemed to have occured in a matter of seconds and then it was over. I wasn't freaked out or anything, more irritated by the pain....at least in my mind that's what it felt like lol.

Keep an eye on your fever, if it persists for another day or two please contact your doctor and if it goes to 103 and above it would be wise to take yourself to the emergency room to prevent any complications.

And you can always call your doctor's office and ask when you can expect to hear about the results of your biopsy. I got my results within a few days but I'm sure when you get your results depends on the availability of your doctor as well as the severity of your symptoms.

Good luck and I hope you start to feel better soon.

Thanks -to all. I am just so frustrated. My fever is staying right around 100 which is okay. I spoke with the office and they said 7-10 days for results. Thanks for listening everyone.

Hi there,
Waking up during an investigation can happen, but try to put that experience behind you now. So sorry, it is not pleasant. Hiatus hernia can cause problems with food and a lot of pain, it may be you have that too. I was diagnosed years ago with that , long before being diagnosed with Crohns too. Hiatus hernia can cause you to have a lot of acid reflux, but once you are prescribed antacids that suit you, you will feel a lot better. You should contact your doctor when you have a persistant temperature and are not feeling well. It takes time for biopsies to come through. I hope you feel better soon. Let me know how you are.

I woke up during my first colonoscopy, too. It wasn't that doctor's policy to put people very far under, for them, but one should be put under deeper, for endo, if only because feeling like you can't breath is ***damn terrifying.

I would keep an eye on the temperature, if it gets higher or stays around for 5 or more days I'd be seeing a doctor.

As for your pain, have you had your gallbladder checked?

Gall bladder is out, temp is much better. I'm thinking the SCD diet is wonderful. Took me time to get back on track after the endo. It was so painful. Ugh.

Hi there,
Glad to hear you are now recovering from your surgery. I hope you feel stronger and much better soon.
Best wishes.

I was wide awake for both of my colonoscopies. In Toronto, they only sedate you enough so that you are relaxed. I was asked to adjust my position and watched my whole colonoscopy both times and while a little uncomfortable, they were far from painful. The prep was by far the worse part of the entire procedure for me!. :)

I'm glad the temperature is better. I would have suggest you to call pretty much asap otherwise considering you went through endoscopic procedure (rather minor but still a risk for perforation) and the fact you are on Humira. Better safe than sorry in these conditions, always call the GI nurse.

Since you said it is better now, don't bother. I hope the SCD will continue to bring you relief!

:(:( Had a bad episode with esophogeal spasms earlier today. I will be glad to find out what has set my belly on fire and to perhaps find a solution. I freaked not from the colonoscopy but from the endoscopy. I felt like I couldn't breathe and grabbed the scope from my throat.

Thea's totally understandable! I haven't had an endoscopy, but, I am still trying to forget the NG tube:eek2:

When I had my tonsils out, I woke up in recovery and ripped the oxygen mask off my face because it was freaking me out with claustrophobia!

that happened to my during an Endo, which is weird because it was a normal result - no pain.

My first colonoscopy though is a different story. I quite remember half waking and saying to my husband (who was not in the room); "MITCH!! SLOW DOWN, you have to go in slow!" So freaking embarrassing!:eek2: (i know that doesnt help you much but hopefully it gave you a chuckle.

TOO FUNNY MISH!!! LOL:ylol2: That would be embarrassing. I've never even had a glimpse of a memory during the three I've had thasnk God nor the endoscopy. I did have discomfort in my throat for a day or two.I hope you get some relief now and so glad the scd diet is working so well for you!!!(Carollco)

Recently had an egd/colonoscopy and was wide awake from beginning to end. Multiple doses of anesthesia (also first time using any) didn't take. Hope things look up for you.
