Lactaid not helping?

Hi there,

I became lactose intolerant almost four years ago, and have been taking lactaid pills with dairy products ever since. Lately it hasn't been working and I still get soft stool and bloating whenever I have milk. I tried getting lactose free milk to see if that worked better, and I had the same problem!

Has anyone else ever encountered this? I'm considering going off of dairy for a while to see if that helps (and because I hate being so bloated!) although I'm hoping I won't need to!

Any advice? Thank!

Maybe it isn't just the lactose that is bothering you? The proteins in cow's milk can be very difficult to digest. A cow has three stomachs and we have one ~ not exactly a good match. Have you ever tried alternative milks? My family likes original almond milk, and it can be found in the refrigerated section of most grocers. It is different but you really do get accustomed to it and prefer it once you do. I was raised in a dairy loving family so the thought of giving up dairy products was shocking to me at first. That was 14 years ago and I have survived :) I am a testimony that there is life after ice cream ;)

Lactaid pills never worked very good for me. I've been using this stuff called: Digestive Advantage for Lactose Intolerance for a few years. It seems to work pretty good for me. But, you've got to take it everyday for it to work. Says that you can take only one pill but, I take the maximum dose of 2 pills everyday just in case I happen to get something unknown with lactose in it. I believe if you go on their website sometimes they'll send you samples or you can find coupons.

As Charleigh explained, it might not just be the lactose. Many people are allergic to milk proteins, casein in particular.

Have you tried yogurt or kefir instead? Both of which are milk products which contain beneficial probiotic cultures that predigest milk proteins and are roughly 99% lactose free.

Ya i have experienced the same thing. I think it is a smart thing to get off dairy all together and see how your body reacts to it. I drink rice milk and if i do eat cheese, i eat goat milks cheese and in small moderation pieces and i can tolerate that. But processed cheeses i cant... so if i eat pizza i accept the pain that comes with it after lol. Good luck!
