Thankyou everyone for your kind words.
What was thought to be cellulitis turned out to be necrotising fasciitis..also known as the flesh eating bug.
Still can't quite believe I would get such a thing.
I was very lucky though, because the leg became so swollen and i just could't weightbear on it,and the redness spread so rapidly in a 24 hour period , they x-rayed it.
This showed the air in the tissues known as gas gangrene.
The docs arranged an orthopaedic rev and before I knew it I was listed for an op. The 3 hour wait for it was unbearable as had had a small amount to eat so had to wait.
Because it was caught early it wasn't as bad as they thought it might have been so they didn't have to remove as much as they thought they may.
I now have to go back to theatre again tomorrow - apparently they keep the wound open and go back in every 2 or 3 days until no more dead tissue is seen..though he originally said 3 days so not sure why earlier.
They are hopeful though with the now 3 iv antibiotics that tomorrow they will be able to close it. It certainly feels better, I can put my foot to the floor without excruciating pain today.
I will let you know the outcome. Not sure when i am going as it is a trauma list so is very fluid.
One slightly amusing thing occured. The consultant surgeon when he was first assessing me was squeezing the swollen bit (triple ouch) and listening to my leg as were his team... Who he told off for shuffling. What on earth?? I was thinking, he was listening for crinkling noises which air makes when trapped under the tissues. He said when he was removing the air at operation he could see my leg deflate and become crinkly!!
And I have a nice side room as I was mildly neutropenic , and it's a new hospital as well, and everyones lovely...find my case very exciting as the orthopaedic nurse said she has only ever seen 2 or 3 cases over the years...not sure I am finding it interesting, just surreal.
