I have had Crohn's disease for 14 years. I was told I had Crohn's when I was diagnosed 12 years ago. So, today I went to my follow up appointment with my surgeon. (I had a total colectomy with a temporary ileostomy on Feb. 15 2011.) From my history and the pathology report done on my colon, my surgeon beleives that I have Colitis with ileum back splash. (because I had ulcers in the last two inches of my ileum) They still can't say for sure. The plan is still to let my rectum heal and take down my ileostomy and hook my small intestine to my rectum. If this doesn't work, I now qualify to have a j-pouch because I might not be a Crohny anymore. This is so crazy! Has this happend to anyone else on here? In a way this is great news, because the surgeon said I have several other options before having to get a permenant ileostomy.

Hi Kris,
Im waiting for a colectomy (May 9th), and my consultant is unsure as to which disease I now have. I was dx'd with UC in 1999, but now it's looking more likely to be CD, the reverse to you. I won't have confimation until pathology reports come back after surgery. I'm hoping above all it's UC- Then I too can have pouch surgery, if not then it's a permanent ileo (something I'm blocking out right now!). Hope your keeping well, and that you get your UC dx.

It almost seems like doctors are just not as confident about their diagnoses as they were 10 years ago. Andrea, I hope you have better results. Even with my pathology report, they don't know for sure. My surgeon basicly said if my ileorectal surgery fails I can have a pouch. If I get disease in my pouch then we know it's crohn's disease. lol Trial and error I guess.

Hi Kris - I think that is great news! The j pouch, if it is indeed an option, can really offer you a great quality of life! And if it's really UC, you just had your disease removed forever! Congrats!
