Do you have any dietary restrictions? Are you experiencing symptoms?
My daughter was placed on a low fiber diet. She is 4 11 90lbs. The doctor is concerned that she isn't gaining weight. The nutritional shakes cause gas and some pain. She doesn't want to drink them. Just looking for more food ideas.

We had to treat the shakes like medicine
Not optional
Kiddo either drank them
Orally or it was a tube
Period
Is she drinking polymeric formula ?
(Pediasure or kids boost )

If so she might need a semi-elemental formula (peptide or peptamen jr)

We had Ds try the worst tasting ones first
Elemental - elecare jr and neocate
So when he got to the semi elemental those tasted GOOD
It's all about perspective

Just adding more food is. OT enough

The body works hard to break things down
Kids with Crohns need more than they can take in
Which is why so many who use food alone are skinny or tiny or both

Ds has had some sorta formula for 7 years
He is a normal weight and hieght for his curve pre dx

Good luck

I know it's hard
Ds didnt jump for joy to start drinking shakes
In fact he cried a lot
And took over two hours to drink 8 oz
Second day was better
After a week he accepted he had to drink them

Now he can drink elemental formula every day
Within a few minutes no issues

My daughter was also very underweight. She tried drinking the shakes but couldn't drink enough to gain weight or even maintain her weight.

Eventually her GI insisted on an NG tube. My daughter learned how to insert it in one day and would insert it every night, do the feed overnight and take it out in the morning. That way, no one at school had to know. The first night was uncomfortable, but after that she quickly got used to it. Within a week, she was inserting the tube in less than 10 seconds.

Our GI insists - for underweight kids, they either need to drink the shakes or use a tube. It is the only way they will gain and grow properly.

My daughter became severely underweight and severely malnourished before she finally agreed to a tube. She was so underweight that doctors were worried her organs would be affected.

The tube was the best possible thing for her. She even agrees now - says it's WAY easier than drinking shakes and she'll never go back to drinking.

Your daughter probably needs more broken down shakes - which ones has she tried? Peptamen Jr or Pediasure Peptide would probably work. Or if she needs elemental shakes, then Neocate or Elecare.

The tube is tiny and flexible - like spaghetti. Kids do very well with it. It's definitely something to consider if she won't drink the shakes.

My daughter gained over 25 lbs with the tube and is no longer underweight. She has much more energy and she feels great. She couldn't believe how much better she felt once she started getting a good amount of calories.

There are Youtube videos of kids inserting their own NG tubes that you can show your daughter.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I am not a parent and don't know about the appropriate balance of food/shakes...But if, as it sounds like, you are doing food as well...Something that has been really helpful for me when told to eat low residue is having a food processor. I boil and puree large amounts of veggies such as carrots, spinach and butternut squash, then keep them in containers in the fridge, which also lowers the "what am I going to cook?" stress for a few days.
My understanding is that the nutrient fiber itself is actually quite important to gut healing - The problem is that high fiber foods are tough on an inflamed digestive tract. This cooking method makes it possible to get highly nutritious food in an easy to digest form.

High fiber is ok for Crohns
But it is not ok for inflamed active Crohns
Since it can cause obstructions or irritate things more (acts like a scouring pad on the already inflamed intestines
Kids needs a lot more nutrients than adults
Which is why formula is recommended for kids
And not easy puréed foods

Adults it's not a big deal
Kids it can be

Also to clarify, I was not suggesting going against the doctor's suggestion of using formula. It sounded like you were incorporating food as well - only responding to that.
