I am a women how was diagnosed with IBD 5 years ago, but only now I am settling on a medication which is called “mercaptopurine” or 6-mp,

but my question is if I can get pregnant on this medication? My GI says yes there is no problem….. But my OB says it's dangerous and and absolutely not take it…..

so I would like to know, has someone become pregnant while on this medication? And what was your experience with it? I know what the FDA says but I whane know what your experience was..

Thank you

From Wikipedia:

"This drug is traditionally not recommended during pregnancy but this issue has been debated and current evidence indicates that pregnant women on the drug show no increase in fetal abnormalities. However, women receiving mercaptopurine during the first trimester of pregnancy have an increased incidence of miscarriage[citation needed]. Davis et al. 1999 found that mercaptopurine, compared to methotrexate, was ineffective as a single-agent abortifacient; every woman in the mercaptopurine arm of the study had fetal cardiac activity at follow-up (two weeks later) and was given a suction abortion.[4]"

I was on 6-MP when I got (unintentionally) pregnant...was on it for most of my pregnancy.....my avatar is the 'result' - a happy, healthy baby girl who lost her first tooth last week!....

Def. talk about it with your GI and GYN.....go over pro/cons of staying on medication. For me, I was very healthy while pregnant - I had just gotten out of the hospital after a flare shortly before getting pregnant....
