Hello everyone, :bigwave:

I just started my Infliximab infusions yesterday and while I was there the nurse handed me a prescription.

She said "Do you know why Dr E has given you this? No? Nor do we."
It was for Metronidazole, anyone else been given this and knows why?
And also as it's an antibiotic should I be thinking about taking probiotics once I am finished with it?

Why don't you ring your IBD nurse and find out why you have been prescribed this, they may be able to tell you the best probiotic too xx

It's hard to say why you would be prescribed it but for some GI's it is a pretty standard part of treatment following a diagnosis. Perhaps your apparent lack of response to Budesonide has prompted it along with the upping of your treatment.

Metronidazole is indeed an antibiotics but some studies seem to indicate that it also has some anti inflammatory properties as well. My son was on Metronidazole for 6 months. A stronger dose for three months in the lead to surgery, he had complications that necessitated him being on it, and then a lower strength for three months post op as the Crohn's specialist believes it increases the chances of gaining and maintaining remission for a longer period of time.

Dusty. :)
