Does anyone else experience the most discomfort/urgencies during the morning?

I find that a few minutes after I wake up and start moving around a bit, I get suddenly get cramps then the urgency to go to the bathroom.

Usually it is diarrhea only and lasts about a few trips to the bathroom.

But since I am mid-flare and on prednisone again, I can go an entire day or two without going, then wake up one morning in pain from constipation and the intense urgency to pass stool which is solid, followed by diarrhea. This is TERRIBLY uncomfortable and can last about an hour. The rest of the day I will feel fine.

Needless to say I have had to change my morning routine and wake up earlier before work to make time for any "emergencies". I am always afraid I will have to be late to work because of it. I basically ride the bus to work in fear.

It makes me not want to eat at all to try to avoid the morning urges.

Does anyone else get like this? What do you do/take to help with all of this cramping morning urgency mess.

Hi CrohnsChicago,
Sorry you are having such trouble and wish there was a solution.
It has happened to me when flaring, but is controlled with cortifoam enemas after a few days.
Crohn,s for me is in the left colon sigmoid area.
Perhaps you need to review your meds with the GI.
Feel better soon
Hugs and best wishes

I used to wake up 2 hours early before ever starting to get ready to go somewhere because that is how long it took before the morning diarrhea stopped. It didn't matter what I ate or what medicine I was on, morning diarrhea was always there...usually 5 times in the morning before any type of break.

I don't have any recommendations for you, but I do sympathize.

I can sympathize. Before beginning prednisone every morning was exactly how you described. Pain, urgency and several trips. I am hoping once I am off Prednisone that this does not come back. It was the worst.
I have no advice on what to do to help since I am a newbie!

yes i know what you mean too, i am off work at the moment due to the crohns but when i am working it is a struggle to get out the door every morning :( . i think the best advice is to go to your doctor again, especially since the constipation factor is new, maybe they need to add something in with the prednisolone. i was going to suggest trying pysllium husks for the diarrahea as i read about them on this site, but you are also having constipation so i don't know then. i tried pysllium husks yesterday morning and they did give me a some relief for a few hours during the day, they slow down bowl movements , but you need to make sure you take them with a lot of water.

Mornings are always the worst part of the day for me as well. It doesn't matter what I eat, or if I eat at all. Currently on TPN and even without eating for days at a time, i am still woken up by stomach cramps, urgency, and diarrhea. Sometimes it can go from midnight until 7 am... sometimes it only lasts an hour or two. I had a few theories as to what was causing it, but seeing as how I have changed my medications, diet, routine, and everything else imaginable, I no longer have the slightest clue as to why the mornings. Also have smaller, less severe episodes during the day... but mornings are by far the worst. Sorry I can't offer much in the way of solutions and/or advice... but you are not alone! Best of luck and hope you feel better soon!

I've dealt with the morning horrors since I was a teenager. I was very ill when I was young, then went into remission for 8 years. The tail end of that to present (22+ years), I've dealt with the morning pain and numerous potty runs, and I do mean runs!

There's some mornings that I have to get up and on the road quickly and early, so I spend some quick time in the bathroom, then know where every bathroom I could possibly need in any direction I might be going.

It's all been part of my life so long that I don't even think about it. My GI just put me on a medication that binds my bile acids in the hope that it will stop irritating the inside of my colon. My gut is so short that the acids don't get absorbed, so they irritate the lining of my colon. I just started it, and am only on my third day of this stuff, but I haven't noticed any big change in my output.
