Hello..my name is Renee and I am here to tell you the story of my son Dominik. He was finally diagnosed in September of 2008 with Crohns after 9 months of tests which included 2 colonoscopies, numerous imaging tests. His liver, spleen and pancreas were enlarged..he had a surgery which included putting a port in his chest for what they were 97% sure was Lymphoma...ya, no it was Crohn's. He was 11 at the time. He has had 3 different Gastroenterologists in the last three years. He has been on Pentasa, Entecort, Apriso and LDN (none of which has ever done anything for his inflammation. He tried Azathioprine for 2 weeks but it made him quite ill. He has never had a problem with D, but he has had growth failure, stomach pains and constipation. He has not been a good eater. His current gastro sent us to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota last month..he had a colonoscopy and an MRI. Of course his colonoscopy has shown that his disease has progressed, but it was the MRI that was so shocking. 75% of his small intestine is effected by Crohns. It is rare for Crohns to be in the Jejunem (the upper section of small intestine) but he has skip lesions throughout all the way to the ileum, with two places nearly strictured. Nobody had any idea that he had that much inflammation. They told me it was the worst MRI they have seen in a long time. Despite my previous objection to Remicade, I asked for the infusion that day! I have my boy back. He has been on Remicade for 2 1/2 weeks and has gained 8 pounds. He has so much energy. If there is anyone out there who feels like they have unanswered questions..I would highly recommend going to Minnesota!

Welcome Bell! I started on Remicade when I was 14, and it changed my life so much for the better! I’m sorry that you and your son have to go through this. At least there are so many new treatment options now, that weren’t available for people years ago. There are new drugs being developed all the time! I hope your son stays well. Welcome to the forum!

Hi Renee,
Well, that is great news about your son's response to Remicade. Good thing you made the trip to the Mayo Clinic.
I hope he keeps getting better! Welcome to the forum.

Hi Renee !
Welcome to the forum :)

Your son's story sounds a bit similar to my daughters. I am happy for him that the Remicade is working so well. We weren't given that option to try it until after her surgery. She will probably be starting it in just a couple of weeks.

don't you just love the Mayo clinic ! We go to the one here in Florida. they are the one's who finally paid attention to the severity of her case (after 2 years of doctor hopping)

I hope the Remicade continues to help!

It is sad in the US in 2011, it is taking so long for a defined diagnosis. I am sorry for the long road you have taken to get where you are. I am new to this too, and this forum is incredible. The emotional support alone is priceless. Good luck to you!

Thank you all so much for your replies. My husband has Crohns Disease as well and was diagnosed at 19. Dominiks journey has been so much different than my husbands, in fact sometimes it seems like a different condition altogether. I have watched my husband go into Crohns related surgery four times in the last 20 years, and I really hope that this can halt the progress enough to keep my son off the operating table for a long time! I wish all of you good luck and good health!
Renee

Hi Bellewis! I am so happy to hear your son has responded so well to Remicade! What wonderful news! I hope it continues to do the trick for him.

Hi Renee and welcome!

Glad the Remi has worked so well for Dominick so far. Hope it continues for a long time!
