I got diagnosed with Crohn's in January, with a really bad flare up, hospitalized for two weeks in March, was on Remicade (now off due to bad side affects) However, I am dealing with (and have been for about a month) and extremely bad flare. With extreme abdominal pain, rectal bleeding (losing about 1 to 2 cups of blood a day), watery and lose stools and uncontrollable bowel movements (i RUN to the bathroom). My GI is away for holidays, and I don't want to go to ER because I will just end up waiting there they will just give me some pain meds and tell me to be on my way.

I am thinking of going on a liquid diet for a week so let my bowel settle with no food passing through, and I need advice on how to get through, have any of you ever just not ate for a week? What helped you? I do have the week off so I am planning on just spending my days in bed.

Thank you for your help,

Becky

Ensure can work wonders for resting the gut. Don't hesitate to go to the ER - if your GI doc's practice has admitting rights to that hospital, you can have them call ahead for you. Best of luck through the flare.

Hello, does your doctor have somebody on call for him? There has to be someone you can see out talk to on the phone, your symptoms can be dangerous. That's a lot blood to lose a day. Are these symptoms new? Have you had your blood levels checked? Are you on any other meds?I am not sure if the ER would turn you away with just pain meds, I would consider going. If you do go ahead with the liquid diet I would try to talk to your GI's office so they can give you advice on how to maintain your diet. Remember that a liquid diet is still going to make your digestive system work, it just won't be working as hard. I hope you start feeling better soon!
