My son just started Azathioprine and is current on that, prevacid and being weened off Prednisone. He was just diagnosed in March, is 14 and woke up this morning to go to the restroom and said he had blood in his stool. We called the doctor and they want us to increase the Prevacid to 2xs a day and call them back on Monday. Has anyone else experienced this? He also has a fistulas, not sure if that makes a difference. So worried and just still trying to learn all I can about this disease.

Thank you!

Hi
Blood can sometimes be a part of a normal flare for me, but if it's the first time he has had his it is always best to get it checked. I have crohns colitis and bleeding is more common with this type it could also be from a fissure which can be painful and will bleed during and after a BM.
Hope your son gets some answers soon x

Was the blood on or in his stool? And was it bright red or darker?

If it was bright red blood on the stool then hopefully nothing to worry about, just a tear or hemmie. But if it's mixed in or darker that could mean bleeding actually inside, from inflammation, and maybe he would need to go up on the pred a little until the azathioprine kicks in fully (can take 2-3 months to reach full effectiveness)

ThAnks for the info. I think the doc is thinking about increasing his prednisone. He wants us to just watch him and see how he does over the weekend.

Hey Mum,

It is not uncommon for symptoms to return when weaning off Prednisone and as suggested an increase in dose before starting to wean again will often alleviate the problem. As Rebecca has said, it does take at least 3 months for Azathioprine to become fully therapeutic so there can be glitches in the meantime.

Good luck!
