More skin problems! This time I have a very sore, red, but not hot area in the skin right above my pubic bone. Have been and am still on Cipro and Flagyl for an abdominal abscess which has now healed over (for the time being) Concern: why would I be getting another abscess when I am still on the antibiotics. Very upset and worried. Stoma nurse checked me yesterday and it was just getting started. She said to watch to see if the redness spread. I don't have a fever. My "fungus infection": getting different opinions on this. Just did a course of oral fungus treatment (3 day pills) Doesn't seem to make much difference. It is getting better. I wonder, though, if the fungus treatment triggered an abscess since it occurred suddenly over the 3 day course of treatment. Will probably see somebody tomorrow. Thanks.

Hi Kitmus, Is it a very large lump or smallish like perhaps an ingrown hair? I don't really know but maybe its being caused by a bug which doesn't respond to cipro and flagyl? Skin abscesses can be caused by streptococci or staph but I dont know whether they respond to cipro and flagyl which are good for anaerobic bacteria. After my surgery for abdominal abscesses, resection and stoma i kept developing abscesses in and around the wound and was put on a penicillin related antibiotic. Can't remember the exact name for it sorry.
I guess the main thing is to keep an eye out for it spreading. But it is puzzling and must be very frustrating for you. Re the fungal infection around the stoma - did you check out the following thread for some help?

Contis crystals are an old remedy for thrush that my help. Maybe ask your nurse abotu them if nothing else helps.

Thanks! It is now bleeding and hurting and red and swollen and I have a low grade fever so it is off to the "Now Care" early tomorrow morning. Darn!

Sorry to hear it is getting worse. How is it now? Did you get any help from the doctors?
And apologies for taking so long to reply, I've been swamped with emails lately and so thing that shouldn't get pushed aside.

Did get worse...turned out to be staph (MRSA)unfortunately and had surgery, iv antibiotics, hospital for 6 days. Healing is going well since. Did not have anything to do with my Crohn's fistula/abscess, luckily. Thanks so much for checking in with me. Do hope I can nip this in the bud so that I can go back to deciding on surgery vs biologics for my fistula and mild inflammation in the terminal ileum...first time Crohn's in my small intestine (after 50 years)

Oh, how miserable. Sorry to hear about the MRSA.

I had great success with Remicade closing my perianal fistulas. Had a reaction to it, though, after taking a break for three years and going back to it, so now waiting for a surgical consult.

Ah thats a shame about the MRSA. I managed to pick it up in hospital a few years ago. While it guarantees me a private room I feel like a bit of a leper with everyone having to glove and gown up just to enter the room.
Glad to hear it has now cleared up and that you got to the bottom of it all.
