New to all this

Hi,
I am having a Colonoscopy, endoscopy tomorrow and have just drank my first picoprep and am waiting for it to take affect.
I have had constant pain on my left side for the last 8 weeks, and the specialist thinks it might be crohns. My 22 year old son has crohns so I am familiar with it, but never thought I would end up with it.
I had a bad episode last November, then everything settled down over Christmas until march when it hit me again, and I've never been so crook in my life.
I'm anxious about the day surgery tomorrow, worried they will say its nothing and in my mind, or that it's something more serious.
I'm looking forward to advice and support on this forum and ope to learn more about this disease.

Good luck! Once you have done the prep that's the worst part over for the Colonoscopy. Let us know how you get on.

Hello Maree and welcome to the forum. It is definetly a bit worryng when going for this type of test because it is not the most pleasant of things and there is a concern on what the doc may see. The good thing though is usually they can tell you what they have seen at least straight away, biopsy results of course will come through later. I wish you all the best and please let us know on how you got on when you can.

Hi Maree,

I just had my 1st colonoscopy on Friday. The prep was easily the most hideous thing I've ever had to do, but the colonoscopy itself was nothing. I'm generally a big wimp and was expecting the worst, but the doc and nurses were very kind and the conscious sedation worked wonders - I seriously didn't feel a thing. Or if I did, I certainly don't remember it. I hope your experience goes smoothly and that you're ok.

I am home from hospital and it all went well, picoprep was ok, the last of the three was the hardest to get down, and I was still running to the toilet at 11.30.
They found two large polyps, and removed them, he also took biopsys of various places in the colen to eliminate, gluten, lactose, cronhs and diverticulitis, although the dr said that it dosent look like cronhs. He also said my stomach has a mild infection, not sure what that means.
So tonight I'm a bit sore, but the horrible pain on my left side has eased, now it's just like my whole colin is aching.
So my question is does polyps cause so much pain? And any suggestions on what I should be eating.

Maree, I had two colonoscopy's one in August last year which was fine and then one in January this year which was very painful. I was sore for about 4 days afterwards due to them taking 24 biopsies. I think the more you have done there while they are in your bowel the more painful it is afterwards. I had soup, scambled eggs and toast and plenty of liquids afterwards. I have not had polyps though so can't help there but maybe another member might be able to help you with that one.

Maree, I've think it's the polyp removal that makes you a bit tender, normally after colonoscopy I have felt fine next day but last time had polyps removed and was sore for a couple of days. Of course if things a bit unsettled anyway before they're in there it will add to your discomfort. Few days then hopefully all settled - worth it to know what you're dealing with though

The specialist said there is no evidence of crohnes in the large intestine, but is concerned its in the small intestine. He wants to monitor it for 3 months and if necessary do more tests. Since then I have had vomiting and diahrea, I am keeping records of all this and am concerned as to how they check the small intestine and is it dangerous?

There are a variety of tests to check the small intestines. Internally would include but not be limited to capsule endoscopy (pill cam) and a small bowel follow through. Neither are particularly dangerous but have some potential for side effects. It's not something I would lose sleep over personally though.
