Hi Everyone,

I have been diagnosed with Chron's about 2 days ago. I just started with some medication this morning and in general in very early stages of learning to deal with this. I am looking for any advice on getting a grip on the fact that this is something I am going to deal with for the rest of my life. My symptoms right now are not too bad, but I am very depressed about the prospect of future complications, higher chances for cancer, and possible drug side-effects. I am sorry if I am sounding like a big wuss here, but I am genuinely worried about the future, and my ability to provide for and support my family.

Any books that could help me deal with this? Any other advice?

Any and all feedback will be very appreciated.

You're not a big wuss. It's a tough diagnosis to hear, but at least you know what it is now, and can start treating it. Many people live normal lives with Crohn's. Some of our buddies here have left and never come back (a good sign for them maybe). It might take some time to figure out what works the best for you, but you will do it, and you will be okay. Better than any book I have found is this forum right here. No doctor can tell you what is written here. Good reading.
Best of luck and welcome!

Lucky for you there have been advances in medicine. When I was first diagnosed I was ten years old and my parents had never heard of Crohns disease. I remember the doctor saying you have Crohns disease you're not going to die but there is no cure and that was nineteen years ago Just remember to be honest with your doctor and trust them if you feel that things aren't working make sure that you tell them sooner rather than later that's always my biggest mistake.

good luck

I just got diagnosed about a month and a half ago. I found this site like a week ago and it has seriously put my mind at ease there is so much info and mental support here. And yes from my research there are tons of books ranging from the nature of the disease to diets. In fact, I just bought one off of amazon reguarding diet lol. As far as side effects and cancer, in my opinion you just have to fight the disease and stay on top of it and not worry about all the negative aspects of the disease. Just stay optimistic and good luck.

welcome! you arent a wuss, i found out recently too and its less than stellar news. stay strong mentally, physically, and eat healthy and stuff easy on your stomach. you can live a healthy life with chron's, people do it, it can be done, we can do it!

The more you talk to other chronies the more at rest you will be and less depressed.
I've had it for 20 yrs. I was diagnosed when I was 8. It just needs some meds and lots of visits to this site..lol

I was just recently diagnosed as well, and after finding this site, I feel so much better emotionally about dealing with the disease. The people on this forum are so fantastic and supportive and it's helped me so much.

My situation was a little different....my dad has Crohn's and he was sick the entire time I was growing up, so my family knew a whole lot about the disease and treatments and so on. I knew that there was a possible genetic link so I wasn't hugely surprised when my diagnosis came in, but I did not expect it to be so hard to accept emotionally. That's what this forum has helped me with so much. And if you read the other posts, you'll see that everyone is just wonderful about telling their stories and what they've gone though and what's worked for them. I'm still new here, but I'm so grateful for the kind words of support I've received in just the past week or so!

hey just to note fellow crohnie...its Crohn's lol.... rotf.....just had to break the ice....

I hope you find remission and quickly!!!!

I want to thank everyone for your kind words of encouragement. It's been a few months since the initial diagnose, and I am feeling a lot better. I still get sad some times, but on the whole, thanks to all of you, I feel like I will be fine.

In my daily life, I really don't know anyone else who has this disease, and reading all the posts in this forum makes me feel more normal.

Normal, why would you want to be NORMAL - it sucks. You have to be nice, and you have to smile a lot, you have to refrain yourself, you have to censor yourself, and sometimes you have to be touchy feely, who would want that!
