Hello everyone,

Today my girlfriend ran across a radical treatment that some other people use for Crohn's. They use Nicotine patches to reduce the symptoms of Crohns Disease. Is there anyone that has heard or uses this as a treatment?

Thank you.

Heard of nicotine as treatment in relation to Ulcerative Colitis, but not Crohn's.

I would like to see actual clinical trials and peer-reviewed studies in scientific journals first.

Same here.

I have read that nicotine has been effective in controlling flares with UC patients as non smokers have a higher risk of developing the disease than smokers. However with Crohn's it is the opposite and therefore the use of nicotine is contraindicated.

I have heard the same thing, not on Crohns either.

BTW Ed, love your puppy, he is so cute!

I have been on the patch for awhile and recently diagnosed with Crohns. I don't feel like they make any difference with pain/symptoms what-so-ever.

I quit smoking and developed Ulcerative Colitis and during flares I tried the patch but it was too much ontop of the flare so I quit that too...

Gut - Me too- got a flare each time I tried to quit smoking. Was always curious about the patch, but I think my last flare was too far gone for ANY treatment.

Welcome Gutfeeling! I use that word alot lol. I hope you come on and join our forum and post your journey of Crohn's on Your Story thread. :ycool:

:hang:

Thanks for the welcome and the feedback and I am so glad to find a forum and group like this as with the current flare I was feeling very done in and hopeless, kind of a woe is me thing... I have a lot to figure out about how this all works and the advice is most welcome.
I am coming to the realization that I do need to follow some diet or other to lessen the flares.

Gutfeeling, not to worry we are all here in the same boat, pity parties are aloud here, we know how you feel. It would be nice for you to post on your on thread about how and when your crohns started. Flares, come and go, you need to find your drug that works for you and low residue diets help. But diet isnt everything inspite of what you hear, but it does help alot. Stress is a culprit too. :hang:

Sorry to hijack your thread Warrior ;)

I met a fellow crohns sufferer today who swears by nicotine patches. Has been using them for nearly 2 years now....I think it could be a coincidence myself, not something I'm willing to try just yet

My UC started for real when I gave up cigarettes. I had some patches over from my quit time. I used the patches for a bit while I was in a bad way with the UC and it seemed to relax my system. I could not tolerate it for long and found greater results with a gluten free diet - although that took a year or so to get me into full remission. its been about 4+ years and it seems I am though the worst of it - hang in there and hope for the best - the more you relax the better things will be - I know that's a tall order and may seem like an impossibility right now.
