Hi folks- my son has had crohns since about age five... maybe earlier but recently had first fistula and abscess. He is on pentasa, methotrexate, Remicade infusions and vsl #3. Recently he has had tarlike stool that sticks and has caused rashing. I requested fecal occult testing and they did the Hemosure ifob test. It was positive. My question is does this mean his crohns is active and not yet under control on all these meds? He is only seven now and it scares me that it has gotten so advanced already. Is it normal for those with crohns to test positive for fecal occult?

I would ask for a fecal calprotectin stool test. It tests specifically for inflammation in the GI tract. Since he has tested pos. for blood then things may not be settled. The fecal calprotectin would be a non invasive way to help determine other tests if it shows a high result.
