Hello,

Its been about 5 weeks having fistula surgery and it was laid open with no insertion of Seton. Everything has been well but today there was quite a lot of blood in the water and on tissue after going to the toilet. It was bright red blood. There is no pain, fever, pus etc and I feel normal. Also I went to see my CRS about 1-2 weeks ago and she said it looks perfect and nothing it tracking or anything. What could this be?

Thanks for reading :)

Hi! Sorry, don't have any answers about your surgery. But I do have some questions, if u don't mind? How was your fistula surgery? How was recovery? What did they do? I may be having fistula surgery next month. Just wondering how it all works. Thank you!

I'm about two months out from surgery to remove a fistula and still have a lot of blood and drainage. I think it's pretty normal. If you're not in pain, it's probably fine. Hot epsom salt baths are a life saver for me, to relieve pressure and help healing!

I don't have a fistula but I'm 1 year post op for an abscess and still open and draining!

I'm going in for my 5th EUA in 12 months on a fistula, and have quite a bit of experience with them unfortunately, ideally if you have a seton drain once it has healed up they like to leave it in place permanently as there is a high chance of recurrence in the same area. The seton should be dry and you shouldn't really notice it until it starts to drain again

Today the nurse probed around with something that is used to pack the wound and said it is a sinus? I am worried if she might have created a sinus by probing lol so I am going to call the doctor and ask if this should be done by a nurse or not because I think it shouldn't be and see if I can get the doctor to check just in case.

Also something about the fistula surgery. I had a opening near the anus and it seems that the surgeon didn't cut from the opening but left a bit then started cutting? Is it so the muscle is not cut or something? Just wondering.

@Angie10. For me personally I didnt have any pain what so ever after the surgery. The surgeon done flexible sigmoidoscopy where they look through a camera to find underlying causes, EUA and the laying open all in one operation which was good :). She said everything was good but the surgery was quite intensive and removed everything. Before the surgery she thought I would need Seton but she said she didn't need to use it. I woke up in the recovery room and was kept for 3 days I think in ward to control the pain because they thought I would be in pain but I wasn't, not even a bit. Had my first BM next day and was very scared but again no pain just blood. Before all of this I thought having surgery at this place was just bad but its not been a bad experience for me. Most people I think says they were in pain after surgery but personally I wasn't. Oh by the way doctor was Asha Senapati. I went to her because everyone thought I had Pilonidal sinus and she was best for Pilonidal sinus surgeries but then she told me it was a Fistula by just looking! I hope everything goes very good for you after the surgery and it will :)

Harry12345....that is good to hear. You hear so much bad things about surgery. Good to know the pain doesn't have to be out of control. Just have to get through the holidays...and then on to business...thanks for the reply :)

Several months after my fistula surgery, I began having drainage and bleeding again. My surgeon did another EUA and said a "skin bridge" had formed. He had to take that tissue out and place a few stiches to pull muscles together. Definitely something that needed surgical attention.

Today I have a bit of fever, not high but just a little. I do have a cold and a headache. There is no change in the wound so should I take antibiotics or not?
