Hello,

I'm after some advice. 25 years ago I was diagnosed with CD. In that time I have 8 surgeries including 2 small bowel resections. The last surgery was 15 years ago up until last week.

8 days ago I had a full hysterectomy and division of bowel adhesions. I came home yesterday and had my first bowel movement today (it wasn't formed). I have the usual surgery soreness but I am getting intermittent pain across the top of my belly just under the ribs. It only lasts 30 seconds to a minute each time. Has anyone had a similar surgery and can put me at ease that the pain is normal after surgery? It was always a risk that the surgery may cause my CD to become active but I have never had CD pain this high up.

Any advice?

Thanks,
SP

I haven't had the same surgery and perhaps someone else has and can be of more help but I think that there are a whole lot of different pains - in type, location, severity and duration - that can be a normal part of healing after abdominal surgery. I think though that it's worth mentioning any pains that concern you to your surgeon and get advice from them.

At only 8 days post-op I think it's far too soon to think the pain is caused by Crohn's coming back. I understand your worry about it being Crohn's but if you didn't have active disease before this surgery then the likelihood is that even if the Crohn's did come back, you wouldn't be noticing the symptoms yet.

But I also think it's good to keep your surgeon or gastro team informed of how you're feeling. Do you have any other symptoms like nausea or fever?

Thank you for your response.

I have mild activity at the join between small and large intestine for which I take Pentasa. I also had some tenderness before surgery but nothing showed up in a colonoscopy 6 months ago and the decision was made to go ahead with surgery.

I am sure you are correct and it is just pain from surgery. I will make sure I let my surgeon knows.
