Hello all, I am a long-time Crohn's patient (25 years) and after multiple surgeries only have about 6 ft of small intestines left. i am going through another bad flare and wanted to get some feedback on what you guys do for pain management when conventional OTC drugs don't work. My GI reluctantly prescribed me some weak Loritab (5mg) but it doesn't touch the pain. Do any of you guys see any pain specialists? I called a couple, but they want a referral from my doctor. My GI says my PCP should do it, and my PCP says my GI should do it! So I'm stuck in this runaround cycle. Any thoughts would be welcomed!

Hi there,
You will see other discussions on this topic in the Treatment section of the Forum. In the course of my crohn's disease (around 25 years), I have been to 3 different Pain Management doctors. They will need a referral, and it should be from your GI since he is the one treating the disease that is giving you pain. They will probably see you monthly. I had to sign a form saying that I understood that taking narcotics long-term will cause me to be physically dependent on them. (Not the same as addiction.) This is what they specialize in - the treatment of pain. Good luck to you!

Call either one and say you need a referral from them as the other one won't. If they argue, just be firm and tell them you are in serious pain and need it immediately and say you will be there to pick it up or can they fax it over to the nearest one.

Thanks for your responses! I just hate "the look" they give ya when you ask about pain medication. I'm sure y'all know what i mean! :)

I just went to my PCP today and told him I need a higher dose because mine just isn't working like it used to.95mg.oxycodone) So he gave me an extra 30 a month so I can break them in half and take one and a half.He also gave me 3 more scripts for the next 3 months and come back after that. He is so understanding and kind. I have the best Dr. in the world. Just love him!
