I went to emergency last night after having intense pain at a level of 8-9. I am used to pain but not like that. I called my dr and he was out of town so I had no other choice.

They hooked me up and did blood work and said it was different than a month moth ago when I was sent by my gastroenteritis for immediate ct scans after I said I was having night sweats. I was given morphine and peptide and fluids.

They sent me home with a prescription for hydrocodoine and Pepcid.

I am already on Budesonide er 3 mg a day, Apriso .375 4 pills a day, and an enema at night.

Shouldn't the corticosteroid should have been working and prevented this major flare up? I also have no idea what set it off. I am eating low fodmap and didn't have anything at lunch yesterday that has given me problems before. Also, shouldn't my dr have given me something for pain all ready? I'm annoyed and confused.

Thanks for listening to me vent and ask a couple questions.

steroids

Sorry to hear you are struggling. If you are already on a restricted diet and having these problems maybe it's time to switch up your medicine to something stronger. As far as prescribing the pain medication, I don't think that most Dr's automatically give you something for pain unless you are in constant pain and request it from them. And you are on a low dose of steroid I don't think that alone would prevent a flare up.

The steroid wouldn't necessarily prevent a flare up. It's probably milder than it would have been had you not been on the steroid, however. Were you unusually stressed or upset before this spike in symptoms? If so, that could be the cause. Otherwise, it's hard to say - there isn't always an obvious cause.

Doctors don't usually prescribe long-term pain medication for individuals with chronic conditions, as they see too much risk of getting hooked or otherwise abusing the medication. In addition to that, you're less likely to report symptoms if you have pain medication already and use it to mask the symptoms. Some are more likely to prescribe than others, and in different situations, but obtaining a prescription through the ER during a situation like this is normal.

Are you feeling any better today? How long have you been on the Apriso and the Budesonide?

Sarahbear, I was really busy and overwhelmed at work this week so that may be it.

I have been on apriso since feburary and Budesonide for a month.

Tha pain meds and lack of giving them does make sense now. Is as just annoyed and tired and in pain.

This morning I'm at level pain about 5-6 and resting because I was up and wide awake about 4 times during the night. I am trying to hold off for using the pain med for now and using a heating pad right now.

That makes sense about the pain meds now. I was just very tired, overwhelmed and in pain.

I have been very busy and nonstop at work this week so that could be the reason I flared up.

I have been in apriso since feburary and Budesonide for a month now.

This morning I am a pain level about 5-6 and am resting and laying down with a heating pad. I woke up wide awake about 4 times last night and am trying to hold off using the hydrocodoine until I really need it today.

So you're down from an 8-9 to a 5-6, without the pain medication? That's good!

Have you been able to set up an appointment with your GI for when they're back in town? A change in medication might be in order, but either way, make sure you follow up with them.

I actually have a month follow up apt set with my GI on Wednesday already so it works.

Thanks sarahbear
