With my most recent flare i started getting new symptoms... the biggest being server nausea and nasty lower back ache which feels like pressure and hurts more when i'm sitting accompanied by a tummy that sounds like a noisy drain pipe system!! I had been symptom free for 3-4 weeks when on friday i started to feel really nauseas at work... my back had been kinda stiff feeling for a few days prior and then an hour after the nausea started my back ache really took off... an hour after that i was sat on the loo had blood in my first stool and remained on and off the loo most of the evening!! gutted after being symptom free for a period. i've had an upset tummy and backache all weekend with thick greeny looking mucus so just rested then back at work yesterday i had really bad back ache again all day! by the time i got home i was sat on the loo again. phoned the crohn's nurse who is overseeing my treatment and i felt fobbed off for the second time... she said it could just be a coincidence but will run a stool test anyway and really didn't seem concerned. 4 weeks prior when i was flaring straight after coming off steroids she brushed it off as IBS. currently on mp6 one every 3 days and allopurinol. I'm newly diagnosed back in july so maybe im just over worried?? is back ache a symptom of flare? HELP!

A back ache can be a symptom of different things - something to get checked would be for kidney stones, as a person with Crohns' can be susceptible to them - I have had multiple cases of stones over the years, especially when flaring.

The blood should be checked out too if it is a new symptom - a person with IBS does NOT have blood.....

How long have you been on medications? And I think you meant 6MP - that sounds like a very low dose. What dosage of the allopurinol are you on? Something else to be checked is to make sure you are not having a reaction to the medication.

Hi thankyou for your reply... I will bare stones in mind I hadn't thought of that it is a pressure ache literally at the base of my spine in the joints and it's really stiff so thought something must be going on as it literally came on sudden and within an hour I was on the loo so can't be just a coincidence surely? I was on 50mg of mercaptopurine each day but it started to cause toxicity to my liver so they reduced the dose to once every 3 days and added the allopurinol which will apparently change the way my body metabolises the 6mp causing me to have higher "good" chemicals from 6mp and less toxic chemicals, have you heard of or experienced this before? X

Oh and sorry I have been on mercaptopurine 10 weeks it was reduced 2 weeks ago and I was on steroids for 8 weeks before that. Diagnosed only on 6th July so I guess still trying to find the right meds. Just frustrating being fobbed off with ibs as I worry what damage is going on. I was asymptomatic for 4 months before my colonoscopy yet when they checked inside there was alot of ulceration and active disease.

Does sound bowel related. I've had the same where I get sudden back pain and pressure and I'm rushing to the toilet before long, but then it does get better. Is that what happens to you? The pain from your bowels can radiate all around your abdomen, and with the nausea, blood and gurgling clearly something is going on in there.

I think 6MP (like Aza) takes several months to work.

Yes that is what happens it is relieved slightly after going to the loo it's so strange as haven't had the back ache or nausea before and old had blood a handful of times. Yes I was told that the 6mp would take 8 weeks and I've been on it 10 but I guess as they have just reduced it right down and added the allopurinol I have to just wait and see... so frustrating when I'm worrying about what damage could be going on in there. Guess I just need to chill out! X

I just had similar symptoms - a lower back ache. Mine was a regular achy-ness for a few days then an added pain came on - it only lasted 10-15 seconds then went away, but repeated every 10-15 minutes. It was a kidney stone.
