Hi All,

I'm looking into ways to keep myself from becoming too malnourished while trying to recover from my current flare. Has anyone tried the "Perfect food" green mixture from Garden of Life? It is quite expensive, and I have some skepticism about Garden of Life in general due to its wild claims to be able to cure many illnesses. Nonetheless, I want to try to give my body every advantage it can have right now. Any thoughts on this? Is it safe to use a product like this while flaring?

thanks!

Any reason why you can't eat kale, either cooked, juiced or blended into a smoothie?

That product seems to make a LOT of wild claims and lists ingredients which really haven't been shown to benefit humans - like grasses and algae.

Never tried it, but personally if they are giving false information about curing illnesses I wonder what else they are making up as well (including the ingredients). I wouldn't use their products just on that basis.

Are you actually malnourished? If you are absorbing enough nutrients then any more will just pass through the body (at best, as you can have too much of some nutrients) which will be a total waste of money.

If you are feeling/looking healthy and your bloods have come back fine then, in my eyes, there's no need to worry

It's true, his books and products apparently have made unsubstantiated claims. Also, as far as I know, he doesn't even run the company anymore and therefore whatever quality standards may or may not have been changed. Thirdly, naturalnews.com recently did lab tests on the Raw Meal--I think--and found high levels of a few heavy metals like tungsten; this is due mainly to the rice protein which is likely, despite being USDA organic, sourced from China. I think Jordan now runs a company called Beyond Organic.

All the above notwithstanding, I still from time to time take the Perfect Food and have never had problems with it. For me, I would put it in my "safe" food category. However, since the above revelations came to light, it is uncertain how clean the chlorella/spirulina is in Perfect Food, given the above rice protein sourcing issues. Naturalnews.com has listed metals testing on some chlorella and found aluminum levels pretty high in some cases: http://www.naturalnews.com/039145_chlorella_heavy_metals_lab_tests.html

Generally, it is probably good to take any powdered supplement with fiber-containing food so as to have some sort of roughage to adsorb and eliminate any trace metals, etc.

Honestly for calories and vitamins I think making your own smoothie is a safer bet. You know what you put in! Whole food nutrition is better.
