peri anal crohns

i am new here and have not been diganosed yet, but searching for answers to what is wrong with me. for the last 7 months have been having severe problems with my anal area. had fissure, diarrhea, and lost 22 pounds in one month and still losing weight. i am seeing a colon rectal doctor and gastro doc and my gastro said something about crohns. for anyone that has peri anal crohns can you please tell me what your problems were when you first were diganosed with this. thanks.

I have crohn's in the anal region (although it was suggested perianal crohns actually means fistulas and absesses and proctitis is an inflamed rectum but hey, who's being picky). Look below at my signature for the details \/

I can sympathise with bum troubles :)

Hi Jenny,

I was first had problems about 25 years ago. Chronic D, weight loss, pains in the gut. Initially treated as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but did not respond to treatment. After a year or so had a biopsy of the Rectum and that showed Crohns. Sulphasalazine put me into remission and lived without may problems untill six years ago when I developed abscess/fistula/fissure. Ten surgeries to date. Imuran and Remicade were no good and am now on weekly Humira. Still have a fistula with a Seton in place and get a lot of pain in the backside and my leg.

I hope you get a diagnosis and some effective treatment soon.

Wishing you well.

Mark

Hi Jenny

I have crohn's of the terminal ilium and perianal disease. I get a lot of pain in the rectum as well as bleeding with bm's due to fissures, I also have skin tags that swell and become sore. It can be pretty miserable.

Three years ago I had botox injected into the spincter (under anaesthetic) which helped the fissures to heal. I am due to go in to hospital again next month for an examination under anaesthetic with a view to having botox again if there are fissures present (I'm sure there are!).

I find a soak in a hot bath or a hot water bottle can help to ease the pain. I also take codeine phosphate which is prescribed by my doctor.

I hope you get a diagnosis and treatment soon.

All the best

Di xx

thanks all for responding to me. i am waiting on blood test results and then the doc will schedule me for more tests. i just want to find out why my rectum and anus is giving me so much trouble, plus losing weight, vomiting and right sided pain after eating. mark, you talked about a biopsy of the rectum how is that done with colonscopy or?

Hi Jenny-

All my issues started with fissures that wouldn't heal. Then it progressed to developing an abscess and a second fistula about 5 years later. I had a LIS which did miracles for me coping with the fissures - the spasms where gone. I would get spasms so bad that walking was difficult.

A colonoscopy is what finally diagnosed Crohn's. My CRS had a hunch it may be crohn's so he sent me to the GI. They found chronic inflammation on my ileocecal valve. So it is very localized to my ileocecal valve and peri-anal area.

All my biopsies for granuloma always game back ok in my rectum and anal area when my CRS did them. All my blood work tested ok - Reactive protein, B12, etc. So not one test can be completely conclusive either way.

Hi Jenny

Yes skin tags in the anal area can be a feature of crohn's. They don't like to remove them either as healing can be a problem and they come back anyway.

Have you had any relief from following the gluten free diet?

Hi Sam, I have in a way, I used to get really bloated and gassy a lot of the time and since cutting out gluten I haven't been bloated at all, which is good and I feel a lot better for it. I sort've feel like the very mild eczema I had on my arms has calmed right down too (I used to have eczema very bad as a child). As for my backside, I'm not sure, nurses have noted minor granulation in the wound bed which is a good thing, but that's more likely to be from the steroid I've been using for the past four weeks, rather than the lack of gluten for a few days. But who knows! On Tuesday I'm seeing my GI and I'm going to ask him about gluten and 'autoimmune proctitis'. It hasnt been that hard though, giving it up, it's only a problem if I go out to eat:) What about you?

Haven't tried a gluten free diet, I don't know if I have the will power, although I would love to try eating healthier :)
