Hi,

I had a perianal abscess with induration and had incison and drainage four weeks ago. This is around the anal area on the left buttock. I am aware the healing process is slow and I am taking care as instructed by the nurse. However fro yesterday I have noticed that there is small swelling , it like one cm long from anal area but this time it is towards the right buttock. I am very much stressed because of this. not sure if this is start of one more perianal abscess and do I have to go through the entire exercise again. Please guide me as I am very much stressed and reading all about abscess over internet I am kind of very demotivated and worried about this.

Thanks

I am no expert on abscesses, but I HAVE had two rectal abscess surgeries in the past. The first time I had a rectal abscess I was in terrible pain and crying and hysterical. So much pain ! I was sent right to the hospital by my doctor and had the surgery a short while after admission. The second time I felt the abscess but it was not large and painful like the first one. I took a cab directly to the ER. They admitted me to the hospital and I had the rectal abscess surgery the next day. I experienced no complications from either surgery and had no pain afterwards. My recovery did not take a month. Since the first one was large and painful, I DID have a nurse come to my apartment once a day for 2 weeks to pack my wound ( it was pretty deep). I was at home for 2 weeks. The second time around the abscess was small and required me to follow up with the surgeon just one time to remove the packing. Every person has different experiences and no one case is the same. There is a great thread here about fistulas, abscesses and fissures. I had an anal fistulectomy in 1992 ( a terrible experience for me. Hopefully in the year 2015 this same procedure is much less tramatic for folks as it was for me 23 years ago.) Don't panic, that only makes things worse ( I have a lot of anxiety myself). Since every person and doctor and hospital and healthcare system is different, I would recommend contacting the doctor who did the surgery. You will need an appointment for them to look at the areas to make sure all is healing well.
