perianal absess

My husband has Crohn's and is suffering from an absess which the hospital Registrar has now put him on antibiotics for. He thinks the antibiotics probably won't work but with it being Easter they want Paul to ring on Tuesday to see how he is. Well, it's definitely burst but the head of the absess is inside his body, so just loads of blood and mucus coming out. Would you still wait until Tuesday when his nurse specialist is back at work or should he ring NHS Direct?

Sorry to be naive but he's only recently been dx with Crohn's and it's all new to us. I can't get him to use the forum, so hope you will welcome me.

Thanks.

Well, it depends if the registrar wants to do anything with it. If this is the first time he's had the abscess they might want to leave it and see what happens, sometimes AB's do let it heal okay. Otherwise it's surgery to open it up, or place a seton.

I think I'd wait if he's okay with that, if he's in a lot of pain or blood loss he should go to A&E.

Welcome Frankie!! Of course you are welcome here, anytime! I have not had a perianal abcesss, but I do know if he has a fever that is a bad sign. This disease is very tricky, and if he is in a lot of pain or dehydrating, I would take him to the ER. What country are you from? Too bad your husband wont come on here, we dont know who is who, we just want to help. It is very embarrassing at times for men and youngsters but pain and abcesses is something to be dealt with. Any questions, there is always someone here to help out. Many spouses and mom's an dads are on here. It is a place to get support and answers to an unpredictable disease! Hugs to you and your hubby!

I have had abscesses/fistulas heal up on antibiotics, but I have also had them perforate my bowel and almost kill me. So it can go both ways. Any severe pain, fever, vomiting or blood loss and I would go straight to the emergency room.

Hi Frankie,
Hot baths are recommended for perianal abscesses. After my abscess seton procedure, they recommended 3 baths a day to promote healing. I would just fill the tub enough to cover my butt.

Also, unfortunately Crohns is a disease where one must loose their inhibition quickly. At my last follow up vist a few days ago, the surgeon said "Ok, let me have a look". Because this is my 2nd follow up, I knew that meant drop pants and underwear, and kneel on his table with butt up and out. So undignified.

I've had many years getting used to these indignities, but it could be hard for your husband for a while. Best of luck to both of you!

Hi Frankie
and welcome

Sounds like you're in the UK? keep your eye on hubby's temp or if he has fever, vomiting and if he is in terrible pain, I'd go to A&E, but having said that, Bank Holiday Monday in A&E will be a bloody nightmare!
Remember, you can come and talk to us and vent whenever you want!
Lotsa luv to you both

Hi Frankie, and welcome to the forum. Hopefully you are able to convince your husband to read many of the posts, if not post himself. But whether you have Crohn's, or a relative or friend with Crohn's, you are always welcome. Any questions you have, or rants you want to go on... we're here. =)

I am currently going through a round of antibiotics for an abscess right now myself. Thankfully, it is responding to the drugs (this time). Baths definitely provide relief in my experiences. You don't even have to have a full bath if you get one of the things that fits in the toilet (depending where the abscess is). I have had about a dozen abscesses over the years, and only one of them has required surgery to drain it. If the abscess stops draining, and gets hard - take your husband to the emerg. Complications can quickly develop if it doesn't drain.

Good luck, and hopefully it drains fully and doesn't come back.

Thank you all so much.................

for replying to my message. The absess burst Sunday morning and he went to the NHS Walk-in Centre Monday morning. The Dr there said most of it had drained away and now he's waiting to talk to his IBD nurse. I think he'll be going back to have it looked at sooner rather than later (fingers crossed).

Frankie,

I was in the same predicament that your husband is in now back in Oct '09.

The docs might want to place a draining seton to make sure a redevelopment of the abscess does not occur.

THE most important part of having a fistula and abscess is keeping it a clean as possible. This is best done with frequent hot baths.

Good Luck

Welcome Frankie. Tell your husband to definitely come on and talk with us. I have talked of things on here that I have never talked about with anyone else and barely talk to my wife about. These guys and gals are great and there is a wealth od information to be found.

I had a perianal abscess 2 years after being diagnosed. It was hurting me a lot. It had to be removed surgically
