Hi all,

for those of you who have had a definitive (i.e. permanent ileostomy), due to having all of the colon removed.

Do you continue to take medications? If so, is it necessary or just to possibly prevent a flare?

Finally, how long did you stay in hospital after surgery that involved the anus being closed up, and how quickly could you sit comfortably?

Thanks to everyone!

Hi Hopeful - I just had my permenent ileostomy installed on March 15!

So, I can't answer your questions about meds - I am off of everything and hoping to stay in remission. For most people, however, I think they go on a maintenance med.

As for the surgery, the anus stitch up was the worst. It was crazy painful and uncomfortable for about 8 days. Then, overnight, it went from painful to just sore and tender. It has healed up nicely now (going on four weeks) but it will still be a couple weeks until I can sit for long periods of time.

Currently, I recline mostly. If I need to sit, I lean on one side, so I am on my cheek rather than sitting flat on my bottom.

I was in the hospital for 6 nights. I did well, no complications.

Do you have surgery coming up soon?

- Amy
