Do any of you avoid pork products? Had a random woman (not a Dr.) tell me that LJ's fistula/abscess is never going to heal up if he eats pork...wondering if there is any possible truth to this????
He has a fistula that started a year ago that is still open & oozing.

Maybe the person who made the comment was thinking about dogs. I mean, pork bones are pretty soft (in comparison to cow bones), and should not be given to dogs, because the dogs can splinter the bones and swallow the fragments, leading to fistulas. . . (Honestly, I have no idea if that's what she was thinking, but it's the only connection I can come up with between pork and fistulas!)

It seems like too many people think you should eat this and avoid that. I think it really should be based on person experiences vs. anecdotal advice. My father-in-law, who also has Crohn's, keeps telling me to avoid steak and lettuce. These have NEVER caused issues for me. Dairy and really rich foods, on the other hand, can sneak up and get me.

She believes that it's the bacteria in the meat that causes problems for Crohn's patients
F there was real "scientific fact" to this then all of our doctors would be telling us to avoid pork/bacon/sausage but I just thought I would put it out there I case anybody else has heard of this.
I would LOVE  for this literal pain in the butt thing to heal up:ybatty:

Funnily enough, I had a lot of trouble with pork when I was flaring. Don't know if it affected the fistula or not, but it aggravated my stomach pains. Bacon was fine, just pork and ham. But then, I could eat salads, fruit and most veggies without problems which a lot of people can't do.
Crohn's sure is one weird disease.

I agree.

Ron,
Was there any issue for you after your Thanksgiving ham?
What else does your holistic doc say to avoid? And is it just general recommendation or is there something specific to Crohn's?
I'm just always curious what people are trying:)

My personal experience, I have pain in my fistula the day after I eat any pork products and shrimp. Just to avoid the pain I try to stay away from pork and shrimp.

Thanks polar bear...I think I will try the no pork with my son, I'm just desperate for him:eek:
We don't usually eat a pork dinner but we LOVE bacon!!!! Could eat it everyday!
