I had a laproscopic terminal ileum resection last week and now 5 days post op. I am still in a lot of pain, I was discharged on codeine and paracetamol but it isn't helping a great deal. Higher dose codeine makes me feel awful though. I am trying to keep moving but it hurts so much to get out of a chair, and getting out of bed is agony. Wound looks absolutely fine and I don't think there is anything wrong - I am just a wimp!
I expected pain of course but shouldn't it get a little better each day?

Hello, pain is pretty normal however if it is really abnormal be sure to contact your Dr.
Are you familiar with holding a pillow to your abdomen when rising, sitting, getting in and out of bed? It can help give a little support. Also trapped wind can cause great discomfort so be careful with gassy foods or high sugar juices carbonated beverages, try to walk to help keep things moving and it can help relieve some of the pain sometimes.
It does take time to heal, you are so early on. The operation is not for wimps by any stretch of the imagination. It can be very painful. It should get better day by day, it can be a slow gradual healing.

hope you feel much better soon!

My son's pain got better each day. He had ileocecectomy, so part of TI, ileocecal valve and cecum. His was laparoscopic his surgery was on a Tuesday he was released the following Sunday.

He took Tylenol every six hours the first day home and had a px of dilaudid if needed. We are now two weeks out and he has taken 1/2 a dilaudid twice for soreness and 1 dilaudid for back pain(he also has SpA so his back was hurting).

I don't think you are a wimp, it effects everyone differently. I would call the GI and let them know what is going on just in case he wants to check things out.

I hope everything improves soon!

I expect a gradual decrease in pain, maybe not noticeable improvement every day, but certainly week by week. The exception I've found is that a few days after surgery the remains of anaesthetics seem to ware off, and pain increases.

If you have worsening pain or a temperature you may need to check with a doctor.

When you think about it, pretty extensive trauma has occurred to every single layer from your skin to your organs. The scars may look little, but the full extent is much greater than the look on the surface.

As the others have said, give it some time; and definitely go back to the ER if things start to feel wrong. Additionally, it might seem obvious; but I'd go back to the same hospital. They have all the details already so there's no assumptions or unknown information that may have been known elsewhere.

Don't let the potential wait put you off. When they hear about the operation they will generally put you through pretty quick due to the possible complications.
