forgive my ignorance, i know i may be totally off about this...

i love mashed potatoes. i have heard that white potatoes are not the best for you. -at least, if you have a lot of them. lots of starch and such. are sweet potatoes or yams better? does it make a difference for Crohns patients?

i also love rice. white rice? brown rice? wild rice? again, does it matter for us Crohnies?

what's your favorite way of preparing potatoes/rice?

It depends on the crohnie. Some do better with more fiber in their diet and some do better with a low fiber diet. I can tolerate more fiber in my diet, so I like to leave the skins on my mashed potatoes, and I prefer brown rice. A food journal is a good place to start.

As Lydia mentioned, it depends on the person. As sweet potatoes are known to have fantastic anti-inflammatory properties, that's what I usually get. Either way I buy them organic as potatoes are one of the "dirty dozen":
America's favorite vegetable is the potato; unfortunately, more than 35 pesticides have been detected on potatoes in USDA testing. Sweet potatoes offer a delicious alternative with less chance of pesticide residue."
As soon as I get my house, I plan to cultivate a wide variety of sweet potatoes since the different skin colors have different health benefits. My understanding is that purple can be especially beneficial though I have yet to research why.

Rice? Up to the person, but again, organic :D. Milled white rice has less nutrients than your unmilled colored rices so if you can tolerate them, go with color.

As for preparation, there's millions of ways :) We've recently been eating lots of sweet potatoes by slicing then baking them in the oven with a light brushing of olive oil and a pinch of paprika.

Sweet potatoes have more fibre in them then regular potatoes, but because it contains soluble fibres (rather than insoluble), it can be better tolerated.

I like sweet potato fries, mashed sweet potatoes (with cinnamon), and roasted sweet potatoes.

Rice: I love fried rice, rice with stir fries and with curry.

No rice for me thanks. Gives me the D something fierce. Well, if there is some sashimi... I will pay the price, and eat some rice.

I do eat potato's. Mashed, or fries. Sometimes I will eat some plain potato chips, that depends on how flared I am.

I can tolerate and love, love...love potatoes of any variety but find that the red ones in a bit of olive oil with garlic is quite possibly one of the best things I can give my gut.

And white rice is marvelous as well. I find the sticky kind from the Chinese food resturants is so good. Its really cheap too....and I can eat it with no salt or butter. :)
