Pre-existing condition?

Does anyone have any knowledge of the laws regarding pre-existing conditions? My insurance company has requested medical records from my GP related to digestive issues from 2008 to the present. I started having my UC symptoms in Nov. 2011, and was just diagnosed this past May. We got our current health insurance this past March. I'm a little concerned they are going to say it was pre-existing and they won't cover anything. A coworker was telling me today, though, that she thinks the law now requires insurance companies to pay for pre-existing?

My understanding is that the laws that affect whether or not health insurance companies can deny you benefits because of a pre-existing illness doesn't go into effect until 2014.

However, this does not mean that you won't have coverage at all with your current health insurance. Some may make you wait 180 days from the date of your first diagnosis, or 180 days from the date you became insured. It would probably do you some good to call the insurance company direct and get the answers, instead of assuming the worst, which will only add to your stress.

Obamacare will protect those with pre-existing conditions and insurance companies will be unable to discriminate. The problem is the act is only partially implemented to date.

Whether you are protected right now depends on your age. Kids and young adults under the age of 19 are protected against pre-existing conditions discrimination now. Adults will be protected as of Jan 1st, 2014.

If they deny you, you can always appeal their decision. I know those of us with this illness can't afford a day without coverage but thank God Jan 1st will mean we can't be denied.

If people want the federal government to cover stuff, that cash has to come from someplace. That means taxes, and the tax required to cover people with preexisting conditions to get insurance under the Affordable Care Act will cost any person with insurance $63 per year.

I'd be curious to know where you get this number from, but if my cost as a taxpayer is $63/year ($126 for my wife and myself), I'm happy to pay it so that preexisting conditions could be covered. Certainly seems a better use than a lot of my taxes.
