hey guys, have a small bowel series coming up- i have not made the appointment yet as it has to based around my cycle but they have sent me a couple of sachets of picolax (the stuff that you drink, it goes through you and you stop drinking once your stools have run clear) and a diet sheet on foods to eat the day before. this stuff is all for people that have a colon so was just wondering if i'd be able to cut a few corners seeing as i have no colon, god loves a trier! lol

hope you are all well!! hannah.x

Noooooo Hannah, you dont take prep with an ileo! You'll be down and out in no time from dehydration! If they insist, ring your IBD or Stoma nurse and they will set them straight. You'll have to prep with no food for awhile and broths though.

Its always fun to return the stuff to them with a very smug look on your face!

They always have me preping before ileoscopy/pillcam and what not. Only difference is that if the standard is, let say, 1 Gallon of Colyte/golytely, I have to take only 1 liters. If the standard is 2 pico-salax. I get to take only one. I guess every GI team does it differently.

i will double check this all before my appointment but was just hoping i could take a day off work for my test and work the day before. the leaflet they sent me told me to stop eating at 2pm the previous day and immediatley start my picolax sachets...this would mean i need to take the 2 days off.

if i dont take the picolax what time roughly do you think i have to stop eating? or do you think i can eat low residue foods the day before and just skip supper? i dunno i'm confused lol. i just don't wanna take 2 days off work. stooopid work gggrrrrr!

....also forgot to update- the thing i have is looking more like a fistula now. its about half a cm away from the stoma, is a little lump about half the size of a pea and the hole is now visible- i witnessed grains of rice come out of it yesterday! lol

oh the joys! still feeling great, no pain, no nothing so still not complaining.

Depends on your own personal body...how fast do things go through? If they fly through, start fluids only the afternoon before. (sorry) If they are slow, start fluids only the earlier.

I've got a colostomy, and I'm still at the record for the barium....7 1/2 minutes flat from mouth to bag. (never did get a trophy for that)

Anyway, even with the colostomy, I didnt take prep. Just no solids from the afternoon before. And the solids I had was pasta, so soft foods only and no fiber. You might want to start that asap anyway to make it easier.

I have found the day AFTER the scope is the one to take off. Because you will be so tired, and if they take alot of biopsies, it will hurt worse the next day.

Oh no!! Soooo not right, soooo not fair!!!

I took the prep for my colonoscopy...but I have a colostomy. I just stopped eating the day before, took 2 laxatives, and a 1/4 of the picosalax. Seemed to do the trick for me. I was only in the bathroom for no more than an hour getting everything out of my system.

Yeah, if it's a barium meal you're having, I didn't even have any prep when I still had a colon for that. I'm pretty sure you shouldn't be taking it.

Check with your radiology department!

I see you are in the UK. I had the same thing when I had an ileostomy. They sent citramag and when I questioned it they told me it was a mistake and to throw it away!
