question post-surgery

Had 1 foot removed about 6 days ago, home from hospital. I think recovery is going as planned, but I have one concern I wanted to run by this forum. Its a little graphic sorry!

So in addition to my surgery pains and gas pains, I am having some nagging pain in my scrotum on right side into testicle.and it does feel like there is swelling and tenderness frankly where I'd think a hernia would be. I did notice some of this pain in the hospital but now that I see swelling i'm nervous. My plan is to call the surgeon if it gets worse - should I be more aggressive? things seem to moving otherwise.

I did have two hernia surgeries down there as a kid.

I think what I would do is call my local family doc and have her take a look. Don't need a GI or surgeon to figure that one out - should be obvious to any doc. And they would squeeze me in right away to check it out.

They could put your mind at ease, or if there is a problem - then at least you'll know.

thanks, yes, I mean my initial thought is i did just have surgery in center and lower right quadrant so some lower swelling on that side and even discomfort down through the scrotum may simply be normal from the surgery. Thanks for your prompt reply! still it would be nice to have it looked at!

well in case anyone was curious, i did speak to my surgeon about this at least over the phone. he said it is not common but you can get inflammation and swelling along the abdominal wall causing pain (maybe through nerves? I can't recall exactly) affecting swelling and pain through the groin and scrotum. Rare he said. It can go away quickly or take longer time. So ice is the answer for now.

yup, I'm pretty sure that the testicle itself is swollen (the tenderness of which is finally better enough to be able to tell), maybe 2 times the size of the other. hope it goes away! doc didn't seem to want to see me for it. still I'm tempted to track down some other doc who would actually evaluate it, makes me nervous...

Yes, I don't think it makes sense for that to be swollen - unless something got in there? Like a hernia?

my surgeon FINALLY took a look and said I had epidytimitis. He didn't seem concerned. It STILL hurts some and is tender but its better. He offered no real explanation.

My internet reserach suggests that this could be from a complication from the foley catheter, so I'm going to see my primary; I want some labwork to confirm that i shouldn't be on antibiotics or something.

And, two weeks later: after the pain worsening, its visits with primary, then ER for IV antibiotics, then urologist, ultrasound, bloodwork, and another 2.5 weeks of two different antibiotics. I just finished the last round, and as I feared it seems to be getting worse again. I'm hoping that its just that I'm so tense about it (fear of what can be long-term problems including this debilitating pain) and that it is really going to go away this time, but I'm doubtful. And the epididmytis remains swollen and tender. GRRRRRRRR!!
If it gets any worse, its back to the urologist and who knows I may even get another hospital stay out of this for more intensive IV antibiotics and probably CT scan to rule out absess! Holy cow. I have no focus to even remember that I just had surgery for crohn's, my recovery has been delayed by this painful issue. Anyone thanks for listening to my rant. I'll keep you posted if anyone is out there listening.

PS - should have been on antibiotics much sooner than I was.

We're listening! Good luck on getting that healed up. Surgery is hard enough without that complication.
