Hi, I have just had my first sachet of Questran Lite and OMG! I didn't realize it would be so disgusting. Has anyone got any suggestions to make it more palatable? Also I notice it made my throat pretty sore. Anyone else have that? How long will it take to kick in?
Thanks

Sarah found it too unpalatable and the GI wasn't surprised when she wouldn't take it!

I know some people here find mixing on orange juice is okay and others apple juice or squash. If you put Questran into search you should find quite a few threads about it and how to get it down. It generally only takes a day or two to kick in.

Sarah ended up going to natural psyllium husks to deal with the problem and for her they have worked a treat. :)

Good luck!

My Mum takes Questran too, she makes it up with diluting apple juice which makes it a lot easier to drink. She tried Questran Lite but without the extra sugar was not so easy to take and prefers the normal Questran. It worked straight away and makes all the difference to her. She takes three a day. She started off with two but since her op now takes three.

My GI let me switch to Welchol which is a similar med in pill form. They are HUGE pills but at least there is no gritty nastiness with it.

Definitely ask for Welchol! They are big pills like Sailorluna said, but they are a life saver. They actually work better than Questran for me, too. I used to dread having to drink my Questran and I found the best juice to help disguise the utter nastiness was white grape juice.

Try mixing it in flavoured milk, if you can tolerate milk, it tastes better than it sounds.

I had questran for a year.
It is pretty disgusting but I got used to it with the time...

So how long is it until you notice a "good "change. I've noticed that I has extra wind now and also the D is starting to firm up but I feel like I need to go a small amount, all the time. And it's still pretty hot. I've had 3 nights of 1 sachet (4g) now. How long did it take for you guys? And what were the "transitional" changes you noticed?? (Not lovely questions to ask sorry).

Mum noticed a big difference straight away but she was on 2 sachets, this was after an op and she couldn't go further than the bedroom and bathroom.
She has recently been told to cut out wheat and sugar which is helping a bit with the wind and pain.

I was prescribed two packs a day (one to drink in the morning and one at night) and I never became normal but I was (am) still flaring after my last resection. I would say that I stopped going as many times a day after 2 days and if I missed a pack, it was immediately noticeable. I do not have the wind problem on Welchol but did notice it on Questran. Not sure if you have to stay on it for the rest of your life, but I do so Welchol was preferable and I was prescribed three pills twice daily. If I forget one dose of the Welchol, I immediately have a problem. I hope the Questran helps you soon!

So I'm finding the Questran pretty easy to drink now with orange juice. But I just halved the dose to 2g last night and today I have felt like crap all day with nausea and tonight I'm struggling to get off the loo with very bad D. Do any of you think this could be because I halved such a small dose. I'm really down in the dumps again.

It does mess me up if I mess with my Questran or Welchol dose. I have awful D which makes me nauseous. Make sure you get back on the dose, and if doesn't improve in 2 days, I would call the doc because then you'll know it's not the Questran but a flare.

I have been on questran for several years and it is an absolute godsend! I don't think I could cope day to day without it. It takes some time time to get used to the texture and taste, I have it in about 1 cup of water (I prefer cold) and just stir it as soon as I pour it in and keep stirring it constant. I only take one sachet per day, this usually keeps the diarrhea away for most of the day. I am fairly sure that it only took a few days to kick in, but if I miss a dose I am back to being on the toilet all day.
I am not sure about the halving of the dose. I have never done that, but I know when I have constant d's then I feel nauseated.
I would try what sybil suggested, go back to taking the full dose and if you see no improvement go and see your doctor. There could be something else going on.
Hope you feel better soon.
