I have been suffering from really bad dehydration lately, I have been drinking a lot but it just seems to go right through me so it's like my body isn't even trying to re-hydrate itself :(. I get really dizzy, when I get up anytime during the day even sometimes at night I have to lean against something before I even think about moving, I don't even get up very fast :(.

Anyone have any ideas/tips on what I could do??

You need to drink electrolyte mixture. My hospital told me that I was drinking so much water, I was flushing all the minerals and vitamins out. I asked the nurse if I could use diorite and she said that was fine. Just sip it through the day

Hi. Pedialyte, according to an ER doc who treated for severe dehydration, told me to drink it if I'm getting dry. It's ph means it starts to absorb shortly after drinking it.

Hope you feel better soon.

***Hello, always seek medical attention if you think you are dehydrated.***

What helped me was organic coconut water and electrolyte water. I am a bit of a goofball and it can get away from me. Finally figured it out when my toes were cramping so bad, back of legs cramping, dry eyes, dry skin, feeling woozy even while sitting, heart palpitations, sunken cheeks, vertical wrinkled arms/legs, extreme tiredness, confusion.... It can come on slow or fast. The heat, increased d, vomiting or a flare can bring it on. From what I have read it can take a day and a half to start to feel better once treated. When some get dehydrated they cant sweat. Right now I am feeling better, but was in rough shape for too long. NOT GOOD - so get checked out!

Call your Dr.

On top of the other suggestions, eat salty stuff or even add salt to whatever you are drinking.

Horselover,

Sorry to hear of your struggles. Do you have short bowel syndrome as well as CD?

I drink Pedialyte when getting dehydrated. Try to drink it at room temperature. Cold fluids push my trigger and increase my D. Coconut water is good also.

In my case, once my electrolyte level goes too far down, I can't get improvement no matter what I do. Then it's off to the hospital for continuous fluids.

Please don't let your levels stay low too long before getting medical attention. I did one time and my kidneys almost went into shut down.

Most of us CD people always wait too long thinking dehydration will go away just like our gut aches, if we just wait and "gut" it out.

Hope you are able to resolve this soon.

I too have issues with water flushing - after getting an ostomy it was serious enough that I had to have a picc line for a couple months for hydration only. Without resorting to anything exotic, I switched to crushed ice. It satisfies the dryness in the mouth without putting a huge load of fluids into your bowels so they can absorb what is already there. Secondly, I made sure to have adequate bread, potato and banana input. They seem to help keep everything in check for me.

Is there someone around for you who can just make sure you are always coherent? A second set of eyes on you to ensure you do not lose the ability to make proper decisions would be a good thing while you sort out your hydration issues.

Good point! Great idea. Sometimes my husband knows when I'm starting to have an issue before I do. I just start acting a bit off and spacey.

I am coherent when dehydrated. A sure signal a dehydrated body needs replentishment is dizziness when moving from a sitting to standing position.

Please don't wait too long to seek fluid and electrolyte replacement at a hospital or clinic. Don't wait on a loved one to diagnose. Despite their best intentions and love for you, they have a tendency to "wait and see" just like us Crohn's people.
