Hi,
I've recently been diagnosed with Crohn's which they found after I had a perianal abscess. That abscess has now become a fistula and I am having a seton put in on Monday. I'm a keen golfer and I'm wondering how long it normally takes people to recover to the point that walking isn't painful.
Thanks

Having had a seton inserted twice, I'd say it took about two weeks to feel better. But it's the fistula tract that was probably scraped out using a canula that can be the true source of the pain.

Figure 2 weeks +/-.

Good Luck

Here's an older thread where I told my seton story.

Getting a seton - can anyone explain?

The only thing that I'd add to this is that my seton did do a fair amount of unintended cutting on its own. I think it will depend on where yours is and how much activity you want to do, but I would certainly ask your surgeon about what to expect. There's a lot of motion involved with a good swing. And alot of motion (and cursing) involved with my bad swing. :)

I had the seton put in today. So far it doesn't feel too bad, just a little uncomfortable, but not painful. Will be interesting tomorrow once the local has totally worn off. Hopefully that means it won't take me long to get back on the course.
Thanks for the replies

Just checking in on you to see how you're progressing. I hope you're well and on your way to hitting all the fairways and greens. :)

I'm doing pretty well thanks sawdust. I probably could have playing golf this weekend with a cart, but the weather is terrible, so thought I'd give it a miss.

I had a Seton for about 3 months for a rectal fistula. It was a very thin rubber band that did loop around via my outside opening to my anal opening. That is what my doc uses, not strings. First few weeks were pretty hard as I was healing from infected abscess post failed fistula plug. Lots of sits baths per day helped. Once the healing started to progress Seton started to bother me less and less. I also would wash after every BM and put on protective cream - Calmoseptine and wear folded gauze between my cheeks. My biggest problem was the pain once that was better with healing I was feeling a lot better. I took Vicodin as needed. After a while I hardly noticed Seton was there. I did stay home for a month on short term disability as I also had c diff from taking IV antibiotics at the hospital. Did not even think about sex for that first month. did not exercise as it did bother me there. After few months it only bothered me after BM if I did not wash right away. I know people who also have setons – more then one at a time and they deal with them for a long time, so it can be done. Best of luck with it, it does get better!

My seton feel out (after much prayer) and I think I am healed up. It took almost two years, but I believe it was because I am in remission of my Crohns. I started the SCDiet and have been in remission since. As long as I don't cheat I am good. Anyway, the docs wanted the seton (which was a satin one) in me indefinitely. I was devasted. But knew that the abscess had to heal. It takes time and my abscess was huge! Anyway, I knew I would not heal 100% as long as the seton was in me, It started bugging me (didn't realize it was coming out) and then oneday it was gone, and nothing. IT was perfect. Thank you God!!!!! I am still in shock. I feel no pain, there is no draining either. So there is hope out there. Again, I believe the diet is what helped the fistula heal. I was one of those that took no drugs just believed that food was my medicine and it can be but must be done a certain way. check out the diet. Breakingthevisciouscycle.info.

Hope 4 what diet did you follow post op of your seton??

Ive just had 3 setons placed and would love to know any diet changes that could help.
