Hi everyone. I had my first colonoscopy yesterday to investigate suspected IBS and all went well. Nothing reported other than haemorrhoids, supporting their suspicion of IBS. However I did note which watching on the monitor at one point some small red spots/dots, which to me looked kinda like blood blisters. I totally forgot to ask about it afterward and was just wondering if anyone had any idea what these might be?

Thank you for any help or advice :)

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

I do not know what these red spots could be but was wondering what symptoms you have been experiencing that led up to having the scope? Also do you know if the doc took any biospies? Have you had any other tests done?

Symptoms are alternating constipation/diarrhoea for years and variable bloating. No biopsies required. Have had the usual FBC and biochem and been tested for celiacs. Also tried dairy free diet to no avail. It's odd that no one know what these spots were, but quite reassuring theyre not an obvious indication of anything I suppose! :)

My GP. And ive been discharged back to him now from surgical outpatients. Im about to move to a different area of the country in the next couple of weeks tho, so its back to a new Dr and a new approach probably!

Although symptoms are pretty good at the moment so cant really complain. Bloating is the thing which bothers me most just now, go through phases of looking very pregnant! (5'4" and 8 stone so any bloating is quite obvious!) But I know as bowel issues go its very mild, I just though Crohns sufferers might have enough colonoscopy experience to have seen this before maybe :)

Hi RJT and welcome :)

Am I reading correctly that you've had constipation/diarrhea for years but they didn't take any biopsies during the colonoscopy because they suspect IBS?

They didn't take any biopsies because they didn't see anything to biopsy. Colonoscopy was to check there was nothing else other than IBS going on and she said everything looked totally normal (only notable thing was small haemorrhoids).

You may want to ask your GI why they didn't feel the need to test for diseases and conditions such as Microscopic Colitis and Mastocytic Enterocolitis which can only be seen via biopsy and can result in symptoms like you're experiencing.

Hi there , at my first colonoscopy a few years ago they also said I had red spots ( in the descending colon ) and I too could see them on the monitor . When i asked the GI afterwards he said he wasn't sure but it was probably a result of the prep i had taken . he said that some people have diferent reactions to it it can be a bit severe on the linning of the bowel sometimes.
Hope this helps.

Thank you David, when I re-register after moving I will question things further with my new GP.
Peter that is reassuring! Thank you!

I just popped round to day surgery where it was done and the nurse on reception showed me the report which didn't mention anything. They were really busy so didn't want to push it, and felt a bit silly asking about something so random when I'd been told there was nothing to worry about. So I guess I'll never know!

Thanks everyone for your help, I am a lot less anxious about it now. :)
