Remicade while sick?

Ev is set for his 2nd infusion next Friday. Today he was diagnosed with strep throat and tonight he has become extremely congested. His doctor has him on Augmentin but he's concerned with how quickly Ev has gotten sick. Right now I'm listening to him wheezing and coughing in his sleep. I know we have almost a week to get him healthy but it made me wonder if illness can postpone infusion.

Anyone have experience in that area?

Yes illness can postpone infusion and kids on remicade can get hit pretty hard with illness due to the immune suppression, so if he worsens I would call right away or seek treatment. It's just important to be vigilant with infections while on remicade. Also, it may take longer for him to fight off the infection. You may want to update the GI on Monday about your son having strep too.

^ditto
We have gotten infused with both a cough and a fever, but IDK about strep...I would def let GI know. Feel better soon, E~

double ditto...I have seen some pretty sick kids in the infusion room. But I would call and check in. Our infusion nurses once told another parent of a sick child that as long as it wasn't the first day or two or it wasn't respiratory that they usually will infuse but always check with the doc first.

My concern is more getting the other kids in the infusion room sick...of course your darling has been on antibiotics and will no longer be contagious so I am talking about the viral things more.

Thank you all for the replies. His GI does know and he's hopeful, like me, that Ev will be better by Friday. In order to be released and cleared to return home (we're turned from Cleveland on Friday) Ev's 2nd infusion had to be scheduled. He won't be at the clinic this time. He's being admitted to the hospital for 24hrs because that was the only way we could get it set up. I definitely would never take a chance on him exposing other children to illness though and I do plan to let the hospital know.

Ev never gets sick so I'm a bit concerned. This is his first case of strep. I truthfully can't remember the last time he was sick. He's only had his initial infusion but going in we knew he was weak and his CBC showed he was already compromised. I pray he responds to the antibiotics.

Thank you all again. I do appreciate all the info I get here. Truly helps me feel less lost.

We were told DS could get infusions while sick with a cold but NOT if he was still on an antibiotic .
He has had strep and cellulitis both while on remicade.
For strep he had to be fever free and off antibiotics .
Cellulitis he had to be off antibiotics and have an md look at the his wound to verify it was free of infection.
