Hey guys,

Been diagnosed with Crohn's for about a year, had symptoms for about 3 years. For me it was constantly having to go to the toilet throughout the day - when I was undiagnosed I lived off immodium just to get me through the day. Recently symptoms have calmed down after my last dose of Preds (about 6 months ago). Been fine since, except recently my stomach has started to make really loud rumbling noises, quite different to what it normally sounds like when I was feeling okay. Even when I was ill I didn't have these noises (after searching on the internet, the best way to describe them is like a bath being drained!).

Reading up on peoples stories with similar symptoms, it sounds like it might be being caused by a stricture or a narrowing. I'm quite worried - I hate hospitals and I really don't want to have to go through surgery ( I realise at some point this might have to happen) but I just wanted to see if anybody had any similar symptoms and what the outcomes of them were!

Would appreciate anybody's thoughts and experiences on this...I understand it sounds naive but I just want some reassurance.

Thanks!

Hi roSHEEN, and welcome. I have this very annoying problem too. For me it is just an unsettling sound. I dont have a stricture or narrowing (that Im aware of). You say it sounds different than your normal bowels sounds. In what way does it sound different?

Hello roSHEEN and :welcome: I must say my tummy makes a fair few noises as well that can be quite loud and 'gurgly', I tell my husband that it is talking to me :) Would you say they come on more after you have eaten or is it the same throughout the day? It could perhaps be some kind of thing related to indigestion of acid reflux. I had a colonoscopy less than a month ago and whilst is showed active crohns there was no mention of any narrowings..... To be honest it's just something I lthought was now normal for me, I see my GP on Friday so I will ask him and see was he has to say about it.

Hi Rosheen,

Welcome :)

My tummy seems to do the gurgly noise thing quite a bit but as far as I'm aware I don't have a narrowing. Sometimes it can be quite noisy and sometimes quite painful to.

Never really asked the doc what it could be! x

I do have strictures. I have had the sounds. The sounds really arent anything to be afraid of. When you have them, you can feel the pressure build up, and then when it gets great enough, you will feel it release as it pushes everything past the narrowing. I found that while the pressure was building the pain sometimes would get pretty bad, and then go away when everything was able to get pushed past the stricture.

Hi there, I have these every day & i'm just used to it - although it can be a bit embarrassing in meetings, i just tell people i'm hungry! I had a colonoscopy just over a year ago & i have active crohns (aaparently!) & a narrowing where they operated 16 years ago but it's nothing to worry about, it just means that your food has to get through a smaller gap & this causes the noises - i normally get it when i've eaten (in the evenings) or when i drink coffee (as this seems to push everything through in a rush!)

Thanks everybody for your replies and advice - I feel so much better now. It sounds as though this might be a pretty normal thing for people with crohn's and it's not as serious as I thought it was.
I've decided to try myself on a low-fibre diet and see how that helps - I'm starting to realise that with Crohn's the more you decide to help yourself the better. So now I'm going to watch what I eat, be careful and have willpower!
