FYI: I am 35 years old, 22 weeks pregnant and have Crohn's Disease.

A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with a fissure. It was not visible but was treated as one and it went away in a week or so. During the last couple of years, I have had a couple of times where it resurfaced and went away.

Last week, I had a painful BM and some blood. I continued to spot a little (on toilet paper) for a few hours. I made an appointment with my nurse who did a digital rectal exam and a smear on some paper and said there was some minimal blood in my stool. She saw no fissure, but prescribed Anusol like the last time and asked me to follow up. I am more paranoid than usual being pregnant and asked about worse case scenerio and she just said, "Let's cross that bridge if we get there." It just wasn't a comforting appointment.

I haven't taken the Anusol. I didn't really use it the last time either because it did no good. For the last three days, there was no bleeding, but yesterday's BM was painful and large. Today, it was painful and I bled. Just a spot on the TP and when I urinate, it will burn the area if it gets back there. I can feel a sore spot when I take a bath and touch around there. I know something is there, just don't know why she didn't see it. She was just a practicing nurse; not specializing in gastroenterology or anything.

I'm wondering if I should go to my gastroenterologist? I have an OBGYN appointment Friday. I hate to ask him to look but I am freaking out about the blood she said was IN my stool because it looks normal in the bowl and the bleeding only comes after I #2. I read that fecal occult tests should not be done when there is active bleeding from a fissure, so I am hoping that is the case and it's not something sinister like cancer. That's what is freaking me out. I just want to have my little girl and be around for her. Sorry for the essay. I just don't have anyone to talk to about it, let alone anyone who might understand.

Any ideas? Sound like a fissure? Should I ask my OBGYN to look or contact my gastroenterologist for a more thorough exam?

With the fact that you are pregnant it could possibly be hemorrhoids they are very common because of the added pressure on the uterus and rectum. The nurse might not have seen them on examination if they are internal or an external one that retracts after the bowel movement. I have both of them and they can bleed with #2. The ob/gyn is actually the first dr to dx mine. So I would ask the baby dr to take a look and see.

I hope it is nothing serious and you get relief soon.

Hi KelSpe, I really think it sounds like a fissure. However, I'm no doctor so don't take my word for it!!! :p I have had a few fissures over the past year or two and that is exactly what they do, I have a bout of them and then nothing for months, and then if you have a particularly hard stool then you see some blood for a couple days when you go. The fact that it hurts too when you go and burns when you get pee on it is an indicator that it's a fissure. I know what you mean about seeing blood, it always freaks me out even though I know it's the fissures acting up. One doc told me that it always looks like more blood then it actually is because of the water in the toilet. Earnellzwifey is right too you are more likely to get hemmies when pregnant and it could be that. Have them take another look if it sets your mind at ease, however it is painful when you have a fisure isn't it :( Best of luck in your pregnancy and hopefully this clears up so you can stop stressing! xx

Thank you ladies so much! It sounds like a fissure to me as well. It sure feels like one! I'm 10 times more paranoid being pregnant about everything. Crohn's is such a roller coaster ride! With all of the fiber I am taking in, it's bulking them up and although I can go on a routine, they seriously need to go on a diet! :D
