Do your kids take a packed lunch to school? Do they buy lunch? Or are they lucky enough to come home for lunch?

Devynn takes a packed lunch. I was home and she came home for the first few years of school. Then I started working in her school and would bring her lunch with me. Now I work in a different school so she takes a packed lunch every day.
Her lunch is always healthy, she is NOT a sandwich type of kid. Her fav sandwiches are PB&J and schools here are all nut free. This is her typical lunch (todays lunch)...

leftover meat from the night before (today is ham)
tuna macaroni salad
small container w approx 10 grapes (this is new, she would never eat grapes)
sugar snap peas
1/2 mango
cupcake (because its Friday and I have been a baking fool with my cake course)
water bottle with water

Gracie still eats at home (she goes to afternoon preschool). But she'll start going all day in the fall for Kindergarten! She is pretty picky, and mostly eats rice with shredded cheese, fruit, yogurt, gluten free crackers, olives, carrots, edemame, etc. So I think I'll have to pack bento-style lunches for her next year! She has a severe tree nut allergy too so I am skeeered about her eating lunch away from home!

My older daughter takes her lunch every day except Thur. On Thur. she buys at the cafeteria!

Wow, will you make my lunch everyday!? :D I would eat so much healthier!

I always found lunches to be a struggle!! But the ONE big hit I discovered was a home version of pizza lunchables - I toasted 1.5 english muffins (ie 3 halfs) and let them cool, then in one of those tupperwares with different compartments, I would add some homemade tomato/pizza sauce, shredded cheese and sliced ham or salami. Both my kids loved this lunch. (Also added the fruit, snack, etc.)

By the way, love Devynn's picture!!! :D

Do your school allow nuts? Schools here are all nut free. I work in a kindergarten class and we have 2 students who are anaphalactic to tree nuts. One is also anaphalactic to kiwi. Our classroom is nut free and kiwi free. But I still have a child or two (twins in one family all the time) who bring either PB&J sandwiches, chocolate covered peanuts, banana bread with walnuts, or Ferrer Roche chocolate balls ALL the time. I have to check their bag daily and remove the banned items. The (twins)parents have been spoken to numerous times. But the twins also bring chocolate bars for lunch. Its sad really. Yesterday one of them was in complete meltdown mode because she had a sandwich, strawberries and a chocolate JosLouis (chocolate pre packaged cake) she wanted the cake and nothing else, so I ended up taking it away.

Thank you Tess :)
Yes we do homemade lunchable type lunches as well. Usually meat slices, cheese, crackers and fruit. We have made home made pizzas on either english muffins or pita bread. She LOVES them!

Alex takes a lunch most days.

Usually its a ham and cheese sandwich (or roast beef or turkey, whatever we have).
Some sort of chips.
Yogurt.
Cookie or brownie.
Bottled water, sometimes with a Kool-Aid mix in.

He likes cold leftovers too--chicken fingers, hot dogs, ham.

Not necessarily the healthiest, but at least I know he's eating!

Some days I wish Devynn would eat a sandwich. She will on occasion eat a Wow butter and Jam sandwich, or some kind of cold meat. But she would really rather not eat it at lunch. Unless she's home and its fresh.
Devynn usually takes some kind of treat in her lunch. Lately she's been taking cup cakes because of my cake course and having to practice. All my kids are happy with that right now! lol She told me yesterday she usually breaks it up and shares with her friends because they all want a piece! lol

Our school is called "nut safer" meaning that treats brought for the class for a party or snack time are required to be from the list they say is nut-safe -- it is lots of store-bought things like goldfish crackers, oreos, etc. But there is no restriction on what can be packed for individual lunches to eat in the cafeteria. Sooo that is a whole different story. As long as Gracie learns to NEVER eat anything NOT from her backpack she should be fine. Our allergist doesn't really believe in anaphylaxis from non-consumption. A hive or two from contact, maybe, but not likely. Her egg allergy isn't severe, but the tree nuts are deadly. Eek.

Jack usually takes a lunch except every other Wednesday when they have teriyaki chicken and rice.
Typical lunch -
Ham sandwich with swiss cheese or ham and chicken meat wrapped around a mozarella stick, Fridays are scooby snack day peanut butter sprinkled with cinnamon sugar on a tortilla rolled up and cut into bite size pieces.
Fruit - mandarin oranges, banana, grapes, apple slices
BBQ chips
applesauce
100% fruit juice
rice krispie treat or banana bread
granola bar

momto2girls, thats scary :( I'm so happy our schools are nut free. Its scary just working with kids with severe allergies. I have to take an anaphalactic training course every year. Its hard seeing the fear in parents eyes. I have reassured them that I will do everything in my power to make sure their children are safe while they are in my care. I have 24 kindergarten kids ages 3-5.

Jacks lunches sound delicious!
That scooby snack sounds good! Devynn would love it I think. I will have to try it at home.

I pack lunches every day for my son.

Lunch includes:
Hot option: meatballs or homemade pizza or chicken dish
cold option: tuna salad/chicken salad/ cheese sandwich/turkey sandwich
applesauce/grapes/peaches/pears/clemintine
knox blocks
peanut butter brownie or larabar
pumpkin muffin or banana bread

We are following the SCD diet so he can't eat a school hot lunch. We have a batch cooking day every other week and freeze hot meals for lunches. Saves a lot of time and gives him a variety to pick from each day.

Knox Blocks : Knox Gelatin (packets of non flavored powder) with 100% Grape Juice or any other juice you like. Firmer than jello because you can cut into "blocks" and eat them.

I was wondering what knox blocks were as well, we may have to try that. I've always made my jello by substituting the cold water for apple juice.
Scooby snacks are great, they really like them as after school snacks and the peanut butter I think is a good option for a little extra protein - good fat for Jack.
Momrocksout - you can make my lunch anytime YUM!

Yes, Devynn could use it too! lol She LOVES peanut butter, and likes cinamon. I'll def have to try it!

my son very rarely eats during the school day no matter the lunch arrangements. been that way since he started having symptoms about a year before his diagnosis.

says it makes him sick to his stomach and he doesn't want to throw up at school.

Lunch has always been a big problem for us as well. That is one nice thing about homeschooling no more lunch worries for Catilyn. For the others though it is always a struggle to figure out what to take. We found something new though if your kids like sushi, using one of those containers with separations put rice in one section, cut up veggies in another and then nori in the big one. Then at school have your kid put it together for a sushi taco. We learned this from some of the other homeschool moms on one of our field trips. We did it and the kids loved it. It is the only way I can get them to eat veggies.

Alex usually takes lunch, a lunchable or PBJ. He'll buy on occasion. I have an issue that they don't offer water at schools, only milk, that he can't have.

Agree about the water, same with my younger son. Was told well they can go get a drink out of water fountain. Really? he would rather not have to get up every few minutes while he is eating lunch to get a drink...

Jenn my hubby's school NEVER did because the water didn't meet the water safety standard set by the state.
So they had milk or bottled water.

She could bring sunbutter sandwiches ( completely nut free )

DS brings pb&j every day. His school is not nut free .
He is allergic to tree nuts not peanuts and must eat peanuts often to avoid developing allergy t

Sarah wil have more choice for lunch this year. She needs to paid $10 for use of the year 12 kichen which has a microwave, toasters and toasted sandwiches makers.

Okay, what's edemame and bento-style?

Where in Kansas are you from? I grew up in Kansas.

yes, they have drinking fountains, I guess they don't have money to implement bottled water or juice. Milk was/is subsidized. so it goes... He takes his own water bottles.

Jenn
A little tip if he needs to be milk free for medical reasons - ie doctor ordered then
they have to provide a "safe" for him lunch- even if that means buying water just for him.
At aleast if the kid is allergic they do ;)
