I have to use two fleet enemas prior to a sigmoidoscopy
Since I have never done this I would appreciate some advice and also what to expect after doing this (apart from the obvious bathroom effects)
I have been reading that people can collapse from doing this
What is the best way to self administer and can it be done the same way as cortifoam enemas?
I live alone and have no one to help me so I am a bit nervous about it.
There is no choice about the sigmoidoscopy since it appears I am flaring again.

Hi annsplash,

The best thing to do is to relax before, i no it sounds really silly but it really is just better if you dont worry yourself and get yourself worked up before it because it will hurt and wwhen the enema has gone in you may feel that it is running out. The best thing i do is i lay on my left side with my knees bent, i use my right had to administer it inside, do it quite gently cos it might feel quite harsh if you just push it in, then just gently squeeze the bottle little bit by bit until its all gone, you will feel like you will wanna push it all out as soon as you sit up or get up but please just try to leave it for as long as you can, 5 minutes if you can but if not try for the minute of 3-4 minutes, i have never had the experiance of fainting when using one of these its more the panic of needing to get to the toliet quickly, i hope this helps you

I haven't done one in years - but I would lay down on my side, leg bent and administer....try to stay lying down - if you can elevate your bum a bit that might help too.....stay in that position for as long as you can to let it work its' way through things.....

My attitude is it is one of those things that 'has to be done' - no point in getting worked up.....it really isn't as bad as it seems.......at least the tubes are generally not too big!

thank you Porter and Pasobuff for your help.
I did manage both enemas but I don't think it was a very good prep.
However the sigmoidoscopy was unpleasant but I got through it ok.
The crohn's is back!! Thought it was supposed to go away in summertime??
Other tests are now going to be ordered ie CAT scan plus....
Wish I could fly away from it all!!
Very depressing

Ah Ann, I am so sorry to hear the Crohn's is back.
I'll say a prayer for a speedy return to remission for you.

Glad you got the enemas to work okay.
