I have Crohn's for 6 months now, and my taste is all messed up. Why? I don't get it. Bananas don't taste like bananas, chocolate doesn't taste like anything, almond milk now tastes yukky; what is going on?. This has been happening really the whole time I guess with various degrees of severity yet right now I am not even wanting to eat because my mouth just tastes gross inside. - I am brushing my teeth alot for the strong tastes of the toothpaste- but it doesn't last? Is this the disease itself or the medications I am taking? (probably both)
Any suggestions certainly appreciated. -?Zinc deficiency?

Hi. Ive had that lately. It could be medication or thrush. I've cut carbs and sugar. It's helped.

Steroids can mess with your sense of taste -- they tend to make everything taste blander (and they also make people crave different things -- for me, it was boring carbs). Some of the other medications, including azathioprine, can leave a weird taste in the mouth. It looks like you're on both steroids and aza. I don't know if there is anything you can do about these taste issues, but you could talk to your doctor about it.

OK. Thanks for responding DJW and sickofcrohns. - it is reassuring to know I am not alone in this. I really need to check in and consider my carbs intake... i don't even know anymore I was writing a food journal for like month 3 and 4 but now I really am not eating much at all and it is a problem. I think it is the meds really and when I asked my GI doctor she really did not have much of a response as i remember... :) so anyway

peace & love - seth

For me it was medications. Flagyl is on of the worst for that. It was awful. Or if I went a long time without eating. I haven't been on pred in a very long time but I'd have to blame it on that one since it comes with an abundance of side effects. Looks like your one a decently high dose, have you been talking it the whole time?

Oh are you taking a sleeping pill by any chance. Zoplicone cause me to have an awful taste in my mouth the day after I took it. I couldn't eat anything sweet. Including coffee if it had sugar in it. It was super weird and gross

Hi there jlm. Thanks for the response. No, I am not on any sleeping pills right now currently. You are right about the Prednisone though I think - I have been talking for like 4 months now - stopped for a couple weeks and then got real sick so... I think the steroids are the only thing keeping me from Pain. ? Anyway... I am doing mono-dieting right where I just eat one thing and see what happens. ...now these days this past month I am not eating anything much- do you have any suggestions of what might be healthy and taste good. A favorite treat?

I was the same with prednisone as soon as I would taper to about 10mg I'd start getting sick again and have to start all over. I've avoided prednisone for the most part in my adult life now though.

As for food that's a tough one lol. I love food but we have a live hate relationship that's for sure. Especially presently. My girlfriend found these koolaid freezies that are really good. And I love Allens peach juice especially when I'm sick and have a bad taste in my mouth. Im from winnipeg manitoba and we have this sauce here its called honey dill sauce, it's great on chicken and you can make your own. The flavor is great though and I'd say it's pretty healthy. Also great in wraps. I also eat a lot of sandwiches. I'm probably the worst person to ask for healthy foods lol. I tend to eat what I want only avoiding things hard to digest like nuts , seeds, hard veggies. I love looking through foodgawker.com for recipes. Sorry not much help :/

possibly levels of zinc. trying getting some zinc in your diet, take a multi vitamin or something it may help a bit.
