Seton/suppositories??

I have a rectal-vaginal seton in, and am wondering if anybody out there uses canasa (or other) suppositories with a rectal seton - or if anybody knows whether using suppositories where there's a seton can do any kind of damage to the seton or fistula, or cause pain, or whatever?

I was using the suppositories when I had the fistula, without the seton in, and didn't have any problem with them. Thanks for any input!

Looks like nobody uses suppositories with their setons? Anyhoo: I gave them the old college try and didn't have any problems with inserting them. Very carefully. I figured if my CR dr. said I could have intercourse with a seton there, I can certainly insert a suppository with no problem. I called to let the doc to let her know I was going to use them, but got no response. So, guess I'm good to go with using them.

I have used canasa but it was right before my first fistula and I have not used it since.
I have a silly fear that it will some how gum up the works and cause another abscess.

So far, so good. I used them for a week, and am now off until I feel I need them again!

Hi Napster,

I have used other suppositories (not Canasa) with both of my rectal setons. Haven't had any issues. The seton is keeping the fistula open thus I don't see the suppository clogging it up. Curiousity, you mentioned your seton was for a recto-vaginal fistual... is your seton just through the rectum? Or through the vagina as well?

Hi Shermel2 thanks for your information. Good to know!

I have a jpouch-vaginal fistula - the interior fistula holes starts around the dentate line in the rectal area goes to just outside the V opening. So the seton runs through this tunnel, and comes out the exterior opening that's just outside the V opening, and is tied off outside the rectal area, creating a circle. The outside half of the circle, which is visible, runs along the perineum. How 'bout yours?

Mine exits right outside the bottom of the left labia. It circles through the rectum and is knotted outside the near the labia. Apparently it goes through the sphicnter muscle so the seton is the only option.

Such a pain. I've had mine since Feb 2009 and I really hate it. I've been told I have to "keep it in for life". I'm hoping that one day there will be better methods/technology......

Yeah, I hear you Shermel. My CR surgeon said in so many words that there's no fix for this particular fistula. Not many viable options at this time. Why oh why can they send a man to the moon, transplant hearts, transplant faces, but not find a way to close these tiny little tunnels?!?
