I finally got in to see my new GI doctor yesterday.
He is supposed to be the best around, and seems very knowledgeable. He spent about an hour talking to me about Crohn's and said he didn't even hardly scratch the surface.
Before he left, he told me to watch out for the seven deadly sins:
-Beef
-Pork
-Onions
-Tomatoes
-Wheat
-Orange Juice
-Chocolate
He said these foods will cause problems for Crohn's patients.

Has anybody else been told this?

I haven't seen my GI yet but I personally can't have wheat (fiber), tomatoes or beef. I don't typically drink OJ. I haven't had chocolate in a very long time.

Didnt know about the OJ or chocolate. With fruit, the pulp sometimes gets me. I would add Corn in there, popcorn and corn on the cob are a big no no for me, and also a lot of other people on this forum.

The other I do agree with, although some arent that bad for me

Pork causes me problems. Tomatoes come out undigested, but don't really bother me. Chocolate is ok in small amount for me. Everything else is fine.

corn gets my intestine in knots, I don't like tomatoes or chocolate...but beef, pork and OJ(in small amounts) I'm fine with

pickles while I'm flaring can be bad, but when I'm ok if I eat a lot of them it can make my insides feel kind of nasty

Yeah I thought this list seemed kind of strange. Nothing really stood out to me besides beef.
But I'm giving it a try. Any dietary change is worth a try I guess.

Peas are bad for me too (I think)... I had a bowl of split pea soup on Friday for lunch, and spent the whole weekend having bad stomach pain.

part of that list sounds like no-no's for GERD/hearthburn
-Beef/ pork (fatty meat)
-Onions
-Tomatoes
-Orange Juice
-Chocolate

Not been told by anyone, but all of those are no nos for me, except onions and tomatoes. And sugar and caffeine.

Lol well I didn't eat anything for months and I was still really ill. (I was on a liquid diet). Many years on and I can eat fine with no problems. Just on a low fibre diet to help with the strictures. Everyone is different when it comes to food and diet, imo

This disease certainly is different for everyone...

Beef and pork (may as well just say all red meat) are for sure on my do not eat list along with the wheat, orange juice and chocolate.

Tomatoes I can usually tolerate but not during a flare.

Onions however I can eat all day long and never notice a thing.

But then here's one that no one else ever seems to mention that's #1 on my can't eat list... Bananas.

If I eat a banana, you may as well have the car started and ready to go to the ER because I'll be doubled over with cramps usually felt during a full on obstruction within about 30 minutes.
My GI doc has always scratched his head about that one.

Hi

My specialist didn't make any suggestions, at all, re diet - even though I asked several times.

I think I have a problem with Wheat but found out by accident and am still not certain.

Hmmm I don't know about the chocolate lol. I would add:

1. Nuts
2. Seeds
3. Corn
4. Cabbage
5. Curry
6. MSG
7. Anything greasy

I can handle chocolate. Yay! These are what really bother me: corn, lettuce, broccoli, pork, raspberries, thick skinned fruits.

I can handle lean beef, thought it does makes my stomach a little sore, cause it's harder to digest. A little chocolate doesn't do me bad, but I don't eat a lot of it. I'm not sure what he meant by wheat, and I don't actually know what "wheat" encompasses, but a lot of us have no problem with white breads/pastas. Whole wheat for some is bad, cause of the fiber. Or, people with gluten allergies.

All of the foods in your list have high "hit rates" for causing problems to somebody with Crohn's.

There is a lot of variation and I think more than a little of that variation may be down to misreporting by patients who honestly don't really know or only think they know what bothers them. It's very very difficult to isolate a specific food sensitivity unless you're willing to eat one thing at a time, wait 6-8 hours for a reaction, are able to be certain that reaction isn't from a flare or environmental (including stress), etc. For a normal person going on about their daily life eating normally but trying to avoid one thing or another because they coincidentally had a problem that one time they ate it... it's very tough.

That said, I am absolutely certain that sun dried tomatoes are my enemy. Why sun dried and not just any tomato? I have no idea.

HEHE! These are pretty much the only things I can eat! Maybe I'm just not normal.... *SIGH*

All of those things that were listed usually agitate me when I'm flaring. Except for pork, I'm okay with things like bacon and ribs. But beef? Forget about it. Bye bye steak =[

I know that corn bothers me too. Beef, greasy food, cabbage.
Sometimes tomatoes but I still eat them in moderation.
I miss corn though so much. Best thing from the grill is corn on the cob and I can't eat it. ):

I think corn is pretty much universal for everyone with UC or Crohn's....

At the moment anything to heavy aggrevates my bottom but the i was given the smae list above for big no nos by the dietition when i was put into hospital. Aswell as corn and anything fibre at the moment. I find milk on my cereal even spikes a flare up for me but what else can u have in the morning if not cereal and toast....

I'm finding I can eat most things without a problem. Before I started prednisone I was eating a very limited diet due to no appetite really but things like salad and apples were coming out undigested so I stopped eating them. Have fiished pred and know that my gut isn't 100% better yet but have started reintroducing fruit and vege etc and am having no problem at all...onions however have never and will never be my friend and after trying popcorn when I was really sick I'm too scared to try it again!

P.S when I said to my GI I was eating most things without a problem he said most people can, dont know how true that is!

I don't think there are any "hard and fast rules" for what people with Crohn's/UC/IBD can or can't eat. As for the disease itself, food triggers are a very personal thing. One person may well be able to eat one food type, another may not. You just have to work out what works for you. One of my personal no-no's is Paprika - but I'm sure many won't have a problem with it!
