Hello,

I am new to this forum, undiagnosed and I would love to hear stories from people who have similar problems because my doctor has been fobbing me off for a year.

Basically, for a few years now I have been suffering from a general twinge in my left lower quadrent and back. Generally I get bloated rather easily and I get the occasional fleeting spasm in my rectal area that usually lasts for less than a second. However, on 4 occasions over the last year my abdomen has gone into an excrutiating spasm. The spasm then radiates towards my rectum and the pain is unbearable. I can't even move and I've considered calling A&E. This intense pain usually lasts for around 30 min. After that it begins to subside and I then just feel an ache in my abdomin and rectal area for the rest of the day whenever I pass gas. My GP phoned me this morning and said that I have high levels of calprotectin in my stool and that IBD is more likely than IBS. Could people please advise on whether rectal spasms are a symptom of IBD? Or if someone has a similar story along with their outcome?
More information is that I'm a 27 year old female

Thank you

Hi, I'm not sure if it's common in IBD or not, but I know there have been posts on this forum before about this: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proctalgia_fugax

Does that sound anything like what you're experiencing?

I suspect your GP is thinking of IBD due to your calprotectin level rather than because of this symptom. Calprotectin is often seen as a way to broadly distinguish IBD from IBS, but things besides IBD can raise calprotectin as well. Do you know how high yours is? Make sure your doctors pay attention to your symptoms as well as test results. If it's not too personal a question, have you had any changes in your bowel habits?

Since your doctor is suspecting IBD, you should be getting a referral to a gatroenterologist and further tests, so you'll hopefully have answers before too long.
