Slow wound healing - not infection?

Hello everyone,

Sorry for the long post but I will try to mention everything so people don't need to ask questions.
I had a 12cm stricture which was removed by a laporoscopic iliocecal resection. I innictially recovered well, getting out of bed, removal of catheter, coming off morphine, walking etc all in the first day post-op. Recovered flatus on the third day, left hospital on the forth day, bowel movements returned on the fifth day. On day 7 I went to have my dressings replaced, the nurse said everything was fine, advised me to replace dressings myself from then on. Day 9 I went to doctors and was diagnosed with a water infection (from the catheter) was prescribed Trimethoprim for seven days, have now finished them; that is completely ok now.
Here's where the problem starts. Day 12, my larger incision wound (umbilical one) started to weep blood and a yellow fluid (liquid texture, not puss). I went to a drop in centre to get it looked at by a nurse. She said it wasn#t infected, but was more likely to become infected because it was weeping. She prescribed Flucloxacillin as a precaustion and sent me on my way. When I got home it still weeped, I changed the dressing and it stopped.
Until day 14, I flew to Germany. After nearly 48 hours of nothing, it started again and continued in varying amounts for approx 18 hours then once again stopped. To give you an idea of how much it leaked, I went through approx 6 dressings. Then it stopped again for another day an a half.
Then today, day 18, it has started again but seems to have stopped after several hours.
There is no unusual smell or pain in the area. And the colour of the fluid varies from a clear yellow to an orangey blood colour. I suppose I was slightly more active than I should have been in the days after being released from hospital; walking round my town centre etc and being sexually active with my partner, which could explain the slower healing.
I was just wondering whether anyone else has experienced this non-infection type weeping this longer after surgery, after such a long break in time of no weeping? The nurse at the drop in centre said it is common for the umbilical ones to do weep, but this long after the operation?
Forgot to mention I was taking asprin from about day 7 on the say so of the surgeon as a precaustion against dvt as I was due to fly two weeks after my surgery.
I'm not sure I've mentioned everything, and to some extent I have been told not to be concerned by the nurse I saw most recently, but I am just a little confused as the advise/behaviour I have been given/seen of the medical professionals I have been in contact with has been slightly contradictory. And I'm not sure whether everything is normal and can be explained by my body just being slower at healing than others.
Any info, advise, experiences would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Hi I know this is an old post but I have just searched for posts about wounds. I am 10 days post op and this has started happening to me.

I hope by now all is well with you. Can you let me know and have you any advice please.

I am from your neck of the woods. Had surgery in Fazak.

Thanks,

Kaz xxx

Hi,

Obviously you should speak to your surgeon if you can. If not a nurse, just so they can give you antibotics, just in case. However, the good news is that after this happened to me, it turned out to be no problem at all. The yellow liquid was plazma and the best thing to do is to let it drain and redress your wound every time. Once the dressing has been spoiled to the extent they are soggy then it needs to be replaced. If you are using water proof ones, the switch to ones which allow the wound to breath helps, and letting it get some air in between dressings also helps...a lot. Also, if you can take zinc supplements, this helps healing. Everything turned out fine with me so I don't think it was too concerning in hindsight. See a nurse about this if you can; until then...I wouldn't say worry too much. Just chill out and ride it out. I have since learnt this is quite common, but the medical professionals don't like to tell you about in in case you don't seek medical advice should something more serious happen.

Get well soon,
any other questions, I am still subscribed to this thread so I will reply.

Thanks for your quick reply. I will see how it goes over night. Where did u have ur op? Xxx

I mean you don't want to mess around with anything even remotely assembling a post-surgery infection. Those things are nasty! I'd exercise great caution, but it might help you to get more information about weeping wounds from this database of doctors responses on the subject: http://bit.ly/IUsKPM. You might even be able to ask your own question and a real doc will get back to you. That might give you a bit more medical knowledge around the subject.
