small bowel resection

Need some advice please.

I'm having a small bowel resection next week and I'm surprised I've not been given some potions to clear out the bowel before the op, is this what happens, had my pre op yesterday and forgot to ask!

I thought I would be told to have a light diet for the few days before, just like before the oscopy's!

The only thing on all the paperwork is a light meal the day before due to the anasthetic.

Is this the norm, I'm having full surgery not keyhole?

Thanks

When I had my resection done I wasn't allowed to eat the day before the operation and was given 2 gallons of this awful tasting stuff to drink the full day before the surgery to clean everything out. I couldn't drink it because it was that horrid tasting so they put a tube down my nose to my stomach where it went in gradually like an IV drip. Stool had to run clear before surgery. It was much more involved that any scopes I've had with good reason too because you don't want anything in there for a surgery. Mine was full surgery along with laparoscopic.

I was never told to have a light diet before my scopes or before my surgery. The magic potions tend to clear everything out no matter what's in there. Be sure to tell someone if you aren't running clear the day of or night before and if not, tell them the color as well.

HI Dippymint (catchy name lol) :welcome:. I have had two resections and both times I was already in the hospital. I would phone your doctor because the bowel has to be clear, or infections can set in. Let us know what they say and I have had laproscopic surgery the first time (keyhole) and it was the best thing I did for myself. Good luck and always keep us updated!

My last one was 4 years ago. I didn't take any prep to clear it out, think it was just clear fluids on the day and low residue diet the week before. Once your under I'd say they clear it out. I'm going in next week but will be in hospital the week before surgery for TPN. Good Luck

Hiya: No experience / advice for you, but I want to wish you well as you prepare for the resection. Take good care!

Hi All,

Thank you for your replies. CrabbyRelish I was expecting the potions to clear me out as I've always had them before. Will call the pre op unit today.

Nice to chat with people who have similar problems after all these years (41) of having this disease. xx

Fantastic, just called the pre op nurse and they don't do it anymore, she said just have food as normal. I'm on low residue anyway and was planning to have soft foods. That's one part I'm happy with, not so sure about the rest!!

No clean out? Odd. Is this a new thing? I had mine done about 10 years ago. Do they like shove in a vacuum or blast in some liquid while you sleep or what? They must do something to reduce infection... right?

Hi CrabbyRelish, the nurse said they only do it for one particular procedure. It may be the same in the US now.

ha ha I hope they don't shove in a vacumm but maybe they do something, don't think I want to know!
I will ask after the op and let you know.

The docs called and I'm on tablets to boost my pottasium level as it's too low for surgery on Monday. Fingers crossed it works as I just want to get on with it now!

I still have pain, but am thinking it's my gallbladder. I was suppose to have laparoscopic surgery, but they ended up only having to do one incision. I guess everything that was "bad" came out, lol.

AshleyElaine,

Hope you feel better soon and the gallbladder gets sorted, gee if it's not one thing it's another!
Thanks Dallies, hope Meg is feeling much better.

I've got the camera crew in before the surgeon starts on Monday as I've now got soe abnormality with my bladder so the camera is going in there first. I tell you I never knew how many oscopy's there were. This one is a cystoscopy. With all these oscopy's we have they could probably make a film out of them!

Hi. I had a resection in January and it was an emergency resection. They still cleaned me out. I had to drink like 3 gallons of this awful golytly stuff.

Just remember. Whatever you do. If you're having your terminal ilium removed, remember to ask your doctor about B12 injections. My doctor unfortunately told me I'd be fine and I was for a couple of months but now I'm experiencing neurological problems which is a sign I might be low. Currently getting it checked!

Hope your surgery goes well! I wish you luck!
